5. Good Dog. That would be the Smart Dog. Here's a product that

hotdog lovers will not feel shortchanged with. Smart Dogs don't

exactly taste like the kind you ate in a stadium, but their unique

flavor is loved by all.

Firstly, Hello everyone. I am new to the group and I was introduced by a long time friend of mine. I have recently (6 weeks ago) decided to try a meatless diet. My Sister in law is vegetarian, and my dear friend is also vegetarian. Struggling with weight issues, chronic anemia, and always tired and feeling weighed down... I decided to give it a go, and try something new. I am all up for trying something new if the benefits are explained to me. I gave it a week and here I am 6 weeks later still meat free! I can honestly say, after 36 years of meat everyday... I dont miss it and I feel better. I dont feel as bloated or weighed down after eating a meal, and have even lost 4lbs!!! I can only attribute it to the added fat and grease omitted from my meals.

I am still trying quite a few of the different meat alternative products out there. So I am intrested in what others find tastey to them. I am hooked on the smart ground, and even have my husband hooked on this product. I have tried the Smart dogs as posted earlier, and...these I didnt like at all. I have also tried another variation that came in a can (vege-something or another) and these were also gag-a-licious! To put it mildly. If anyone has a Hot dog alternative that they have found texture and pallette friendly, I sure would appreciate the info. I think this is the only "meat" ... if you can call hot dog meat (LOL) ...that I miss.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone, and learning more health conscious alternatives. Being new to the vegetarian lifestyle, I am still stuck in not knowing what to prepare to have different flavors and diverse meal plans.

A little about myself... (really quick)

My name is Cassondra M Johnson...nickname is Beauty...You can call me Beauty or Cass. I am married to a wonderful man, I am the mother of 6 great kids ranging in age 16yrs to 21 mos. We live outside the city in a nice quiet rural community up on a little mountain where we have 5 acres of lush green and woods for exploring. I am currently a SAHM, but have my own very small home based business, making custom quilts and specializing in childrens nursery decor. We live in Northern Alabama, where we are currently building an ark in the back yard to escape the rain that we seem to get 5 days a week. LOL I am not so much considering myself vegan or vegetarian, but more health conscious. I am currently working on losing added weight from all these kids I have had. I have lost a total of 17 lbs but still have 35lbs to go. I enjoy meeting new people and I hope to get to know many of you in the process of learning new and exciting (yet fast and easy) meals to prepare for my family.

Blessings to all of you... Thanks for having me.

Hi Catherine,

Perfect timing! I just got this early this morning from a friend. I hope this article is some help to you. Also, the Whole Soy cookbook has some awesome chili recipes in it.

10 Really Great Meat Substitutes!

by Leanne Ely, C.N.C.

Going meatless doesn't necessarily mean you're going to have to go without having something to sink your teeth into, if you know what I mean. Vegetarian options for meat alternatives have vastly improved over the years. The variety, too, has moved beyond the ubiquitous tofu dog. Plus, there are no rules that say you need to be a complete vegetarian to enjoy the benefit of a meatless meal. As Bart Simpson likes to say, “Don't have a cow, man!”

The biggest beef from those who eat non-meat products used to be the taste and texture. Fake meat tasted, well… fake. With improved technology and the increased demand for these products, the quality has dramatically increased. Fake meat adds a little pizzazz as well as fulfilling the all-important protein requirement for a vegetarian meal. With the right choices, fake meat can give even the most carnivorous eater a feeling of full satisfaction. So, without further adieu, here’s your list of non-meat fare! Let the games begin: 1. Mushroom Cloud. This is a personal best. Portabello Mushroom burger. No meat! No fake meat! Just a big ol' mushroom the size of a Whopper! Seriously! Grill it up (I like to brush a little garlic and olive oil over the top), throw it on a bun (whole wheat, of course) and top with some serious salad greens, thinly sliced red onion and feta cheese. Now, before you know it, you're totally tripping on a 'shroom burger. 2. The Other Wheat Meat. It's called Seitan (say-tan), and it is made from the extracted gluten from wheat. The texture is the attraction, and this product makes an easy stand in for the protein part of your stir-fry meal. 3. Fakin' Bacon. Morningstar makes a fake bacon that is a tasty alternative to pig out on. The strips are crisp, microwave friendly and a perfect counterpart to your eggs over easy. 4. Ground Down. The versatility of ground meat needn't be for carnivores only. Several companies make TVP (textured vegetable protein) crumbles that are available frozen or can be bought dry and reconstituted. Yves Ground Round is one such product that vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike give two thumbs up! 5. Good Dog. That would be the Smart Dog. Here's a product that hotdog lovers will not feel shortchanged with. Smart Dogs don't exactly taste like the kind you ate in a stadium, but their unique flavor is loved by all. 6. Talkin' Tofu. Sure, it looks scary sitting there floating in that watery liquid like that, but this bland tasting stuff can do all kinds of miraculous things in food, including taste great! All you have to do is marinate tofu, and it picks up the delicious flavor of what you're making. Try it in a stir fry: marinate some extra firm tofu in soy sauce, garlic and ginger. Now, stir fry it in a hot wok with a little oil, and you will be surprised at how meaty this stuff really is!

7. Flip a Burger. Try a veggie burger instead. There are so many brands available now. My favorite is the Garden Burger. Try the mushroom burger for a taste treat.

8. Casing the Joint. A good Italian sausage can bring tears to a grown man's eyes. Really! There's nothing quite like a good sausage. Unless of course you're a vegetarian! Boca Burger has come up an excellent Italian sausage alternative that will have you weeping with joy! 9. Chicken Out. There are all kinds of products out there to replace what the colonel no longer makes for you. Veat.com is a company with an entire mock fowl line that vegetarians love. Boca Burgers and Morningstar make chicken nuggets your kids will love. Give them all a try! And, when someone says it tastes like chicken, you'll know you've got a winner! 10. Just Say No. Like tuna? Want to skip the mercury and the fishy aftertaste? Tuno is made by Natural Touch, and it is an alternative to tuna that tastes very close to the real thing. So, if you're hankering after a tuna sandwich, just say no and get yourself some Tuno. There you have it! Ten meat alternatives that will have you staking out the grocer's freezer case at your local market. Being even a part-time vegetarian is easier to chew on than it has been in the past. No need to stew over lackluster alternatives anymore!

That's funny. That's the only one we really don't like. We prefer Smart

Dogs of Yves Veggie Wieners

Seems like there are alot of different pallettes out there. I sure appreciate the help with the different brands available. It gives me a good refrence point to look for when I am grocery shopping. Thankyou everyone for the helpful advice.

Now...for dinner tonight??? Stuffed bell pepper casserole! Yummmmm!

My Version for anyone intrested....

Put all ingredients directly into rectangular baking casserole dish

Bake for 60 minutes on 375 degrees covered

Slice 3 large green bell peppers

slice one large red and one yellow bell pepper

5 cups rice

2 8oz cans tomato sauce

8 oz water

salt n pepper to taste

diced onion if you prefer

layer (in no particular order) the peppers and rice

pour over tomato sauce and water

top with 2 cups grated cheese (your choice, I perfer an italian blend)

serves 10

We are also having tossed green salad, dinner rolls, and friut salad dessert with it.

You can cut this recipe back.... I have a family of 8 to feed so I bake in bulk! :)

Have a great evening.

I've never been a big hot dog lover, so some veggie hot dogs are an improvement to me. Yves makes several kinds, and my favorite is the spicy chili dog. Don't know if you'll be able to find it where you live.

Hello!

There's a brand of " hot dogs " that they sell up here in New England,

(not sure about the South!) called " Tofu Pups " that are excellent!

Good Luck!

Welcome to the list and to vegetarianism, Beauty. I am new to both as well (about a month).

I agree with you about the veggie dogs, although I don't like hot dogs, either. Veggie dogs are gross. But I love the veggie burgers.

Anyway, I am Darlene and am married to Barry. I, too, am a blessed mother. I have 4 kids that I homeschool. Christine is 14, Joshua is 8, Sarah is 6, and Becky (Rebekah) is 3 1/2. We live in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

Welcome again.

Darlene
