Hey ya'll,

Here's my issue...tomorrow is Thanksgiving, right? And of course, there's

turkey...and my family keeps pressuring me to eat it on that one occasion (as

well as Christmas and Easter, our three major holidays) just to keep the peace

in the family...I would word this " Should I give in? " but seeing as how that

might ignite a flaming war of sorts among the group, LOL, I'll put it this

way...do any of you do it like that, just to keep your family off your back

for those holidays, or any holidays like that for that matter? Thanks.

Peace Up,

***Sara***

I would just say no thanks and keep your value system, otherwise they might

not think that you really believe in what your food choice are.

You might just make a nice loaf or protein dish for all and say nothing.

When I have been with my husband's fam, I have eaten things that I

would normally not! If everything is pre-plated, maybe you can

help with the serving and not put ham on your plate...if you had

food allergies, no one wold force the issue, maybe you're allergic

to ham? ha! good luck

Everyone knows I'm strong willed and they are just the opposite. Everyone comes

to eat all the fantastic vegetarian side dishes I make. I get comments like,

wow I don't think I could give up meat but then again if I cooked like this

maybe I could or I don't have time to cook vegetarian dishes for myself, vcan

you give me the recipe.

No way, I don't back down.

You will have a wonderful day tomorrow and I'll bet you can fill your plate

with so many side dishes no one will bug you. Be sure to make something special

and present it and you can eat tht too. There are tons of side dishes in the

files and most are so easy to make.

Good Luck Sara,

Donna

NO, no, no, Sara, giving in is bad for your health and self esteem! Would you

give in if being pushed to binge drink? do drugs? anything else you didn't want

to do? of course your family doesn't see eating meat as bad for you like these

other things but we veggies have to be just as firm about our refusal to eat

animals as we would be about the other stuff thats bad for us. Really hard when

it's old aunt adorable that we love to pieces and know shes being pushy cause

she's concerned for our health! What worked with my family was to ask, " you

wouldn't push pork on a Jewish friend, would you? " the answer was always no. I'd

follow up ( quickly before they had the chance to argue that it wasn't the same

thing ) that I'd studied nutrition and was making sure to get enough protien and

" I love you so much and I'm so glad you care enough to be worried about me but I

promise I'm getting all the nutrients I need and am very healthy. " if you can

follow this with a change of subject ( like how

is cousin screw up recovering from the most recent disaster LOL ) it works even

better!

Peace,

Angela

Just tell yourself you will regret five minutes of eating turkey and

being weak after the dinner is over. I know you will be OK

tomorrow. You already made the decision to become a vegetarian, this

is just one small hump to get over. We all push you up over it.

I used to hear about stuff but now that I'm in college there are

quite a few vegetarians and even vegans so it's not too bad now.

No Sara, I don't.

If they cannot support me, or at least accept my decisions to do what is right

they can go........ fly a kite.

Ya know, I used to do that in the way back when -

make exceptions to keep peace - especially tricky

if you are visiting family overseas, say, and

then *they* take you to visit someone else who

puts on a feast to 'honour' their friends'

visitors/relatives. And you know what? It didn't

make them any happier or help them to respect me

any more, and it didn't help me to feel good

about myself either. So now I say No Thankyou. Of

course, that doesn't make them any happier or

help them to respect me more either :=) But it

does mean I have been able to live more happily

inside my skin.
