Guest guest
I don't know much about elephant garlic, but I used it once and it was way to mild for me no matter how much I used. I would think that you could still roast it though although it might not be as pungent. And then again maybe the elephant garlic I bought at our local farmer's market last summer was weak. I have frequently used onions or green onions when I didn't have shallots or when I didn't want to pay so much for them. linda " Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it. Guest guest
yes and no. LOL. elephant garlic is very much more mild than it's smaller cousin, and I love to bake it and spread it over breads. shallots rock. They are a cross between garlic and onion if ya ask me. ) blessings, Chanda - GeGee Lite Thursday, December 01, 2005 12:52 PM elephant garlic and shallots question Can anyone tell me of elephant garlic and shallots are close to onions or regular garlic. Guest guest
Shallots are a mild-mannered member of the Onion family. So, you can, and I have, used them interchangeably, esp. since shallots are far more expensive. One trick you could use to tame your onions is to soak them first. That might more closely approximate the recipe's intent. -Erin , GeGee Lite <chilifrenchfries> wrote: > > Can anyone tell me of elephant garlic and shallots are close to onions or regular garlic. Guest guest
I know you've already received lots of responses, but here's my 2 cents worth. Elephant garlic is a mild garlic perfect for baking/roasting. It's not a great substitute for adding garlic in a dish as it's so mild, but is great spread on bread or crackers. Shallots are a type of onion and I suppose I would suggest the small yellow onions as a substitute, but if making sauces/vinegarettes I would try to use them. I wouldn't sub green onions as they are too sharp/potent tasting. You might also get away with the white pearl onions, but, again, they might be too sharp tasting; depends on what you're making. :-) Denise , GeGee Lite <chilifrenchfries> wrote: > > Can anyone tell me of elephant garlic and shallots are close to onions or regular garlic. Guest guest
Elephant garlic is like regular garlic but not as sharp flavored. The bigger the garlic the more mild it is. You can use it like regular garlic. Gayle
