Guest guest Posted December 21, 2005 Report Share Posted December 21, 2005 Julsterner (Swedish Yuletide cookies) 1/2 cup butter or margarine (softened) 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 egg yolk 1 1/4 cups flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 1 egg white, slightly beaten Filling ~~~~ 1/3 cup chopped walnuts 2 tblspns. sugar dash of cardamom (optional) Preheat oven to 325 degrees Cream together first 4 ingredients until well blended. In a separate bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt. Blend flour mixture with creamed mixture. Chill dough for one hour or more. Roll dough thin and brush with beaten egg white, cut into 2 1/2-inch squares. Remove to a lightly greased cookie sheet. Mix walnuts, sugar and cardamom and place a very small spoonful in center of each square and fold each point of the square to the center. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes. Cool on wire rack Note: Before baking you can top the center of the cookie with a dot of strawberry, currant or raspberry preserves. The very tips of the squares can be cut if you find this easier to fold cookies towards center.
