For those who are not aware, there's a nationwide organization called

Freecycle the purpose of which is to recycle whatever you no longer have any use

for. I think this is such a great idea as one man's trash is another man's

treasure. I continue to be amazed at the items that are offered absolutely

free.

Check it out.

I try to recycle everything so would have no use for a trash compactor.

Dishes I wash by hand and air dry. Supposed to be healthier. Hope it

doesn't seem like preaching but if we can save electricity and water,

it is very good for our Earth. Also saves money. A dishwasher uses way

too much water. If I can add something about the Wok. If it is aluminum

I would toss it. There is some question as to whether aluminum

cookware is safe. Hard to find it these days unless it has a stainless

steel, covering. Think I said I only use cast iron or porcelin covered

cookware. I clean the cast iron that I have had for many years, with

warm water(never soap) , dry and then wipe with olive oil.

I would suggest you start your won in your area.

Be your owner of the list.

The freecycle one has too many rules and can get very complicated.

Trust me. I know.

Just set up your own and you make your rules.

I belong to freecycle and it is great! We also have a cheapcycle here that has

items for under $100 for sale. Both are great lists, you can obtain things for

free or cheap and get rid of the things you no longer want.

Interesting perspective on washing dishes, Deanna. I have read an opposite

view, long ago--which is that the heat of the water in the dishwasher is

much hotter than that which comes from the tap, and thus kills many more

germs than handwashing dishes does. I to that view, myself, but to

each her (or his) own. :>)

I do agree about saving electricity, water, whatever else we can, however;

in our house we turn off all the lights we are not using and keep them off.

(No lights on in the bedroom if we're not in there; no lights in the

livingroom, which is the room just opposite this one, the diningroom, unless

we're going to be sitting in there; etc.) Since we live in an apartment and

have curious cat companions, I haven't yet figured out a way to recycle food

peelin's (i.e., putting them as mulch into plant pots, for example) and

such, but perhaps something will come to me yet on that subject.

I clean my cast-iron skillet with canola or olive oil, and season it every

time I've used it, by putting it in the oven on 300 for 30 minutes to an

hour. Learned that from Southern folks, kin and friends, and it sure keeps

that good surface on the skillet.
