Guest guest
I've never lived anywhere else but LA and I know people from out of state are always horrifiled at how little is recycled here. I always try to find a place for everything but some of the things I see are shocking. We had a man from an apartment builing down the street that would change his car oil on the street and pour the old oil right down the gutter drain. Nasty man and he was reported several times. I don't think anything was ever done about it. He finally moved. There are two huge mountain piles of free compost made from grass clippings , etc. There were also many art projects decorating the center created by local artists and children and all made from recycled/found objests. How wonderful it would be if every city landfill/recycle center was like this.
Guest guest
-Donna, I also had a neighbor who changed his car oil in the street. First time I saw him doing it I went out and had a friendly neighborly talk with him about it. He really was a dear person. I asked " do you know where the oil goes when you put it down the gutter drain? " He replied that he had never thought about it, so I explained. We had a great chat and sometimes good people just do things out of habit, never think about the outcome and need to have a gentle push in the right direction, with love. We are each at our own level of understanding. Guest guest
-Donna, I lived in the LA area briefly in the late 70's and I watched huge barges going out to sea loaded with garbage. When there was a storm at sea everything from needles-syringes, to K-rations, and things unmentionable were washed up on the beach..I was horrified. So back home here in Colorado we bury the stuff. Not much better. What are we doing to our Earth??? -- In , " genny_y2k " <genny_y2k> wrote: > > -Donna, > I also had a neighbor who changed his car oil in the street. Guest guest
The 80 yr old kind man across the street tried to talk nicely to him but got a blast of 4 letter words. Guest guest
That's unfortunately very true, Donna. :<( Sometimes, many times, I have found to my sadness and dismay, I learn that people would rather stick to their traditions even when that tradition has been proven to hurt their health. I'm thinking of my parents, my mother with lymphoma cancer and my father with a family history of prostate cancer--both of whom continually tell my dd, who tries to get them to go vegetarian at least: " No, that's too expensive. " !!! As Howard Lyman says, " What's more 'expensive' than cancer? " Makes me so sad. Guest guest
How about this one from those who still smoke. " We all have to die from somthing " or If God meant for me to graze I would be a cow. Like I said before we are all at our own level of understanding. Guest guest
Yes, we are all at our own level of understanding, but we shouldn't stay there...if we did, none of us would be veg now, I daresay. We should try to gently persuade others as much as we possibly can, in my personal & much-thought-about view of the matter at hand. And to that end, my dd is waging anew the campaign to get my parents to even give up meat/dairy for seven days. And to see how they feel afterwards and during that time. Even if they went back to the old way, they would have the new way to compare and to linger in their memories, is the hope here. Those are sad comment that you quoted, and they come from folks who have not thought thru what exactly it is saying ...that they have not thought it all through. We can devise ways to try to help them do this. That's all I am saying: give peas a chance :>) (with nods to John Lennon)... Guest guest
-I agree Bron and recently encouraged my 86 yr. old mother to give up red meat. Guest guest
I've lived in the Santa Cruz area, northern Cali for 15 years, and I have quite the opposite viewpoint. Whenever I travel out of state, I am aghast at how little others recycle. Lynn in CA. Guest guest
HI Bron: Instead of giving up dairy and or meat and eggs for 7 days maybe just start with 1 meal at a time. Maybe your daughter could cook a meal for them and let them see how good it is. Then maybe next week she can make 2 meals and so on. People would be very surprised to see how much variety there is when the meal is not centered around meat. Gayle
