Guest guest
I buy flax seed bulk and grind it in the blender, store in the freezer and toss it into almost everything I bake. It's also good sprinkled on top of rice. Guest guest
-Donna, I do the same with both dark and light Flax seed. I keep the seed in the frig and grind just what I need. I also use Flax seed oil..Barleens is the tastiest. I use it as a salad oil and put some in almost every thing I eat. Love the taste of it. Warning some brands have a bitter taste. Guest guest
I had heard or read somewhere that flax seed can be kept indefinitely and didn't need any refrigeration. (or refrigeration) Some one gave me a 5 lb bag of flaxseed and I just shoved it in the corner of my kitchen in it's bag/box. I had no idea what to do with it, and since it was tucked out of the way, I had forgotten it until this subject came up. Is it still good? It's about 2 years old, now. Colleen - is it whole flaxseed? Smell it - does it smell bad? If so, obviously not good. If it smells ok (or not at all), grind a little bit and smell that - does it smell fresh and nutty? If so you're probably ok. If not, toss the whole thing. Whole flax seed lasts a lot longer than ground - ground will definitely go rancid sitting on a counter or in a pantry, but that tough seedcoat will protect the whole seed and it lasts quite a bit longer than ground flax.
