Guest guest
I find it funny when people say " OH , yeah, (here their tone gets sad and sympathetic, like I'm being deprived) you CAN " T eat ..___ (fill in the blank) , cuz your vegan " I always reply that I CAN eat anything I want.. I choose not to. I'm considering modifying that response.. I love what Johnny Depp (as Willie WONKA) said, . everything is edible, you could eat me, but that would make you a carnivore and that is frowned upon... or something like that... hee hee jenni On Jan 11, 2006, at 11:41 AM, Kyrene Ariadne wrote: > Ah gotcha > > I grew up in a really secular Jewish household, so much of this > stuff is > beyond me. lol > > Numerous people however, have found it amusing that my dietary > habits force > me to keep " kosher "

Guest guest
I know of a recovering diabetic who responds to similar statements with *exactly* that. When I discovered that my five million food intolerances made me two steps shy from vegan, he told me " Welcome to the world next door to mine. Maybe I'm wandering into PETA territory here. " It's only your relatives' fingers, just pick them out. " I'm sure you could substitute other things in there for what they wouldn't possibly continue eating, even if they picked it out, but I won't go there. My apologies if I've already gone a bit too far. Gary

Guest guest
I am new to being vegetarian (not vegan) and I was under the misconception that most folks are. To me vegetarian meant " no meat or poulty " . And yes, I assumed it would be OK to pick out the offending bits (just as I pick out the beans in chilli or soup and still eat the rest of it). I think it is merely a matter of ignorance. Sometimes you just don't know what you don't know....and how can you question it if you don't know that you don't know it? LOL I know that doesn't make any sense. LOL But I can remember watching someone try to copy material from one document to another when Windows was still new. I asked why they didn't just highlight, copy, paste. They just plain had no idea there was another way to do it than the one they were using. So, it's thinking you know what a vegetarian is (someone who eats vegetables only); and then making assumption on that definition, and not even realizing that the definition is not correct. OK I am done---done poorly---but maybe someone out there will understand. The popular basic definition of vegetarian needs to change or become more clear. Guest guest
Dove - I think you expressed that very well indeed and it does make a lot of sense. Yes, I would say most people's comments are made out of ignorance. They don't know much about vegeterianism and they don't know that people choose this lifestyle for many different reasons. Labels can be very difficult to not only define but to put into such a large group of people. One reason for confusion is there are people who say they are vegetarian, but they eat fish. Well, there is a label for that, but perhaps 1) they don't know that a label exists or 2) it's easier for them to explain it the way they always have. It was nice reading about your own experience/knowledge pre- vegetarianism. Thanks for sharing.
