Guest guest
I am not new to being a vegetarian, but recently my BH and I have decided to go herbivore all the way. (I am 6 weeks past chemo for breast cancer and still have radiation to follow. I will browse for a season. It is still a wee bit slow going.) It is more difficult to find things not animal based because the eggs and dairy will sneak up on ya in prepackaged foods..:^P Any encouraging words, suggestions, etc.. to help will make me very happy. Recently, I have begun to make my own soymilk the old fashioned way..without a soymilk machine. Good to be here. D'vorah
Guest guest
I hear ya on the dairy--it is VERY difficult. My suggestion is in avoiding dairy, to look for the Kosher symbol with the word " pareve " on it. This works perfectly for me, because eggs and fish are considered to be pareve and I continue to eat those, albeit rarely. But others have to be more careful. If you're looking at something (like butter) or some other product that would or shouldn't have either eggs or fish and is expected to ordinarily be a dairy product, just look for the word " pareve " and you're good to go. Also, I've noticed that they're getting better about labeling things as " vegan " to let people know they're ok to eat. On 1/11/06, Dvorah L. Guest guest
I know about eating kosher. Yep! That is what I have been doing for the dairy. It comes in handy because even creamers that say " nondairy " aren't in the purest sense. I haven't quite gone off the eggs yet. It seems be more difficult for me to replace them in recipes. Practice makes perfect. Honey is still open for debate... Most of the time we eat as close to nature as possible whether cooked, raw or some where in between, but there are times when fast fix comes in handy. Guest guest
First of all..thanks to everyone for the welcome!! Second..anyone knowing some one or who is going through cancer treatment..I feel your pain!! I honestly believe it is genetically modified foods and other junk added that got me in this position. I am both hormones receptive. Outside of the cancer, my docs say I am healthy. I eat right..gets lots of exercise. You know..the usual. I was a low risker! Just has to be the hormones and stuff in the dairy and eggs. We did not decide to take the final step to exclude even the dairy and eggs out of our eating because of the cancer. It has just been moving in that direction for some time now. BTW..we also eat yeast free.. not even nutritional yeast...so there gos alot of the veggie stuff on the market. Guest guest
Welcome to the group, D'vorah and I wish you strength and resilience in your fight against breast cancer. I've read a lot of things on line about the benefits of flax oil in fighting cancer. One German doctor even had her patients taking it straight by the tablespoonfuls. Either way, if you don't already, invest in some good fruit and nut oils as they are so beneficial. Another product that is in almost every prepackaged food (unless it's natural or organic) is High Fructose Corn Syrup. Keep your eye out for that when reading ingredients and stay away from it. Our files have so many wonderful recipes and recently many of us have been on a greens kick, so you can find some great recipes for all those greens that are so good for you! cheers, Denise , " Dvorah L. Guest guest
-I am so sorry..I am just now finding this. How rude of me. We have recently been adding ground flax seeds to our diet as an egg substitute. Why high fructose corn syrup in particular??? Guest guest
-Barlene's Flax Seed oil has such a wondeful nutty flavor I too take it sometimes by the spoonful.. Deanna -- In , " Dvorah L.
