Guest guest
I use unsweetened carob chips, they taste like dark chocolate. I freeze then and they stay crunchy in oatmeal cookies and if they are room temp.then they melt as they bake. I try to avoid chocolate as that is the one thing that can set off a migraine in me. White chocolate tastes rather waxy but it depends on the brand I guess. Never cared for raisinettes........looks like something a mouse left behind............ Guest guest
Oh mercy me! You, Chanda and Donna keep me laughing for hours when I read these posts. I do like raisinettes but that thought has run across my mind also in their appearance. Guest guest
I can't stand the taste of carob, though I've tried repeatedly to like it. To me it tastes like dirt (yes, I ate a few crumbs of mudpies when I was little! LOL). I also do not like semisweet chocolate, but luuuuv milk chocolate...so...sigh...I'm rather stuck when it comes to chocolate chip cookies. Will have to break out the milk chocolate chips, as there are no vegan counterparts/equivalents that don't cost the moon or thereabouts. I have a fantastic triple chocolate chip cookie recipe that...until someone comes out with vegan soymilk chocolate chips, will not be able to be made authentically at my house. Ah, well! Guest guest
Any possibility of melting them down and adding soymilk? Has this been done/tried? Guest guest
OH BOY>> duh! yes, that has been done. EXCELLENT IDEA Andrea! I highly suggest it.. i've melted chocolate chips with some margarine to make a sort of peanut butter square.. much like a reeses peanut butter cup in taste anyway.. Guest guest
Yes, the only Vegan chocolate I have found is very expensive. The rest including all of the semi-sweet and milk chocolate sure enough contain milk. I feel the same way about Carob. Unless one adds gobs of sugar and milk it tastes horrible. So when I can't stand it anymore and need chocolate,LOL, I opt for the chips..Better-healthier than any candy bar, etc. I hope.. Guest guest
actually, I've been very successful at finding affordable vegan chocolate chips. for instance: Whole foods chocolate chips are $ 1.59 or $1.79 maybe?? ingredients...Sugar, Chocolate Liquor, cocoa butter, soya lecithin (added as in emulsifier) vanilla extract. safeway select jumbo semi-sweet chocolate chips, I've bought these for $1 a bag maybe $1.50.. sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soya lecithin (added as an emulsifier) vanilla extract, vanillin (and artificial flavoring) salt. I also found sunspire.. regularly I think these are over $3.. way too much for me. I got them on sale for 2 bags for $3, and I had a dollar off coupon.. these are the most wholesome of the the chocolate chips. including? whole grain malted barley and corn, unsweetened chocolate, coccoa butter, soy lecithin (added as an emulsifier) pure natural vanilla. I know there are more.. it's about checking labels... looking for hidden milk.. and watching sales! also, if you have a brand you prefer, that you find to be a bit pricey, write to the company and ask if they have coupons! also, watch watch watch for sales! =) jenni the frugal vegan. Guest guest
OOH, and if anyone shops at Trader Joes, they have some great dairy free chocolate bars, as well as chocolate chips.. very affordable for that chocofix! =) jenni the frugal vegan =) On Jan 18, 2006, at 5:35 PM, genny_y2k wrote: > Yes, the only Vegan chocolate I have found is very expensive. Guest guest
> Any possibility of melting them down and adding soymilk? Has this been > done/tried? You could that... but you end up with chunks instead of chips (not that big a deal I guess, but some like chips). Unless you put it in pastry bag/ziplock and squirted out bunches of chips, I suppose, but that would take forever. *lol* BTW, I think it would take less soymilk (and I would probably use vanilla) than you'd think - if you add too much you'll have ganache, which is good, but much too soft. If it doesn't end up with the " milk choc " flavor, perhaps you could increase the milk, but also add some cocoa powder, to keep the firmness? I dunno. Guest guest
HI Deanna: Never thought to make chocolate covered raisins. I used to make chocolate covered pretzels all the time. Some times I would do the long pretzels and some times I would break them up and drop them into the chocolate and then spoon them on to the wax paper to set. When my kids were in elementary school I ran a monthly fundraiser and I would make these so the volunteers and there kids had something to snack on.
