I don't know if they still sell it (last time I went they only had it for

special order) but getting the potato pizza w/ roasted garlic added to it was my

favorite. YUMMMMY! I should make some. Pizza crust, sliced potatoes, onions

and rosemary, with added garlic. Can't be beat!

Jennifer Surrette rarely hits a fast-food drive-thru, but the other day the

28-year-old Halifax schoolteacher found herself rushed and in a lunch-time

lineup at Burger King.

A vegetarian for the past 10 years and a vegan for five, Ms. Surrette, who

counsels kids as young as elementary-school age about vegetarianism, was keen on

a meatless burger as she idled behind a pickup truck loaded with four ravenous,

male construction workers.

" I totally expected to hear 'Whopper, Whopper, Whopper, Whopper' from their

window, and I thought I was hearing things when they all ordered veggie

burgers, " she says. " It was unbelievable and wonderful. I was sitting in my car

cheering. "

No longer the sole orbit of middle-aged ex-hippies, fanatical animal-rights

activists, anemic health nuts and flaky movie stars, vegetarianism today is

embraced by a wide assortment of people. And they are being converted younger

than ever.

Lisa of The Simpsons isn't the only eight-year-old who shuns meat. These days,

hordes of university students, teenagers and even children go vegetarian for

political, environmental and health reasons, embracing our furry and feathered

friends and slashing their risks of nasty conditions such as heart disease,

cancer, and obesity in the process, all hile their parents watch from across the

dinner table.

Thanks for posting this!! I eat veggie burgers at Burger King a lot

of times when I'm in a hurry. I am so glad to know that more and more

people are eating them. Maybe they will be a permanent fixture. I've

already heard that McDonald's is getting one, too...but I have a

thing about McDonald's and I really don't think I could bring myself

to eat there at all.

Thanks again,

Thanks! I will definately look this article up. I also think about the

availability of vegetarian/vegan foods in traditional fast food places. I was

recently on a website called Soy Happy. These people have been advocating for

vegetarian foods-particularly veggie dogs in public arenas like ball

parks/stadiums. They have been pretty successful. You can check out the website.

I posted it below. I just want a decent veggie dog in the movie theatres here in

New York. By the way if anyone knows of good place to get vegan/vegetarian pizza

in New York City, please let me know!

We have McDonalds veggi burgers in Canada, but I can't stand them. Yuck!

They are dry and over spiced.

GREAT vegan and vegetarian kosher pizza (not sure who certifies it, though) on

97th and Broadway called Cafe Viva. YUM!!! They DO use soy cheese with casein,

though, so make sure to skip the soy cheese if you're vegan.

Last year, there was an accouncement saying they're made with poultry by

products. I think it was a month or two after the BK Veggie burger came out.

Thanx. Can you please tell me if you have personally tried it? I went to the

Cafe Viva located on 2nd Avenue. I lugged all the way up there bringing my

growing belly and my two year old to find such a disappointment. It was a small

place and none of the pizzas looked particularly inviting. All but one pizza was

made with soy cheese but it was topped with mucho broccoli. The marinara pizzas

looked all hard and dried up. There was another pizza with lots of vegetables

and what looked like dried up soy sausage. It was very disappointing to say the

least. I ended up going to veg-city where I had the chicken parmesean which was

decent but nothing to write home about. I heard about the one you are talking

about but I figured it wouls be the same. I am craving a lot of junk food-i went

throught this with the last pregnancy-and all I want is a soy cheese with pizza

with veggie pepperoni which this place claimed it had. I would hate to go all

the up there for nothing so your input would be appreciated.

Viva Herbal Pizzeria: " Organic, Gourmet, Vegetarian, Vegan Pizza, Pastas and Tea

Bar " at 179 2nd Ave between 11th and 12th St. is to die for! (And, I believe,

much closer to where you live). Plus, they have free delivery. I just entered my

third trimester of pregnancy (with #2) and regularly crave their stuff. In fact,

I have the take out menu in front of me right now. It even lists what is

actually vegan -- or they can substitute regular cheese for soy cheese in most

cases. They have wheat free crusts, yeast free crusts, whole wheat crusts, corn

meal, and spelt crusts -- and that is just their pizza! Tons of toppings from

which to choose, as well! Plus soups & sides, salads, calzones, sandwiches,

desserts, beverages and, of course, an array of the aforementioned pizzas and

pastas.

Just so that there are no surprises, however, be aware that this is also a small

little, no frills looking storefront -- but, unlike your Café Viva experience, I

can pretty much guarantee that you will not be disappointed by Viva Herbal (of

course, I've just built this place up so much that I hope I don't inadvertently

let you down!)

Bon apetit,

Robin

Dunno about Viva Herbal, but as of the last time I was at Cafe Viva, they were

incorrectly claiming that their soy cheese was vegan. But they did have

cheeseless pizzas. Their roasted garlic is tdf!!!

Viva Herbal notes on their menu that the soy cheese contains casein. However,

the pizzas noted as vegan have no cheese at all (toppings are listed underneath

each pizza) so they are, indeed, vegan and no one is mislead -- vegetarians,

vegans, vegitans, whomever are free to make their own informed choices. \PS --

There are 10 vegan pizzas offered and one that is vegan optional.

Thank You. I ran into a woman the other day who also recommended cafe viva's but

she said it is best to order your own pie cause their ready made pizzas weren't

that likeable. nevertheless I will head up there. I also found kate's joint that

offers vegan/veg pizza but I haven't tried it yet.

That sounds yummy! Do you cook the potato some before putting it on the pizza?

We make pesto pizza with spinach, zuchinni, and tomato, and artichoke hearts.

Sometimes, if I have it on hand, I add vegan parmesian. It is also tdf.

Yes, they roast sliced baby reds wqith rosemary and red onion with extra virgin

olive oil, then put that on the crust and bake it (with added garlc, if you

ask).
