Guest guest
I am planning to go a folk festival in Pennsylvania in a few weeks (Kutztown Pennsylvania German Festival). I was looking at the site today to do some planning and came upon the big spread for the Ox Roast. I could not believe some of the language there. My favorite is: " Come see this majestic beast as he slowly cooks over the red-hot coals. " They also refer to the ox as a noble animal and talk of the " wonderful pastime of eating an ox. " Good grief, do people ever think about what they are doing and saying? Karen
Guest guest
I was driving out to Richmond yesterday to visit some family and passed a humane society shindig along the roadside. Right behind their banner were 2 huge smoking barbeque pits. They didn't say what they were cooking, but my guess would be something other than veggies. Seems a bit contradictory to me. Most certainly at a German festival..... Really, do you have that hard a time believing this?! :-) It's not close (calendar-wise) to the Vegetarian Summerfest, is it? www.vegetariansummerfest.org It'd help balance out the ox slaughter.... ~Doh ------- Loyalty to the country, always. Guest guest
I recently saw a local ad about a charity event for saving endangered birds. They were having a chicken BBQ. Guess they didn't consider the chicken to be endangered! Guest guest
Sadly, I don't know of any in MD, wish there was. If anyone knows about a Veg fest please fill me in (so I can fill up nycuk nyuck). Stephanie Oh and another thing. My daughter and I were watching a show on animal planet yesterday and they showed this aquarium in a pet store in S. Africa where one fish was disabled and the other fish would literally lift the diasbled fish to the top to eat at feeding time. Yes, even the scaly ones think and feel! It was a sweet story. , " tripleoxer8 " <tripleoxer8> wrote: > > I believe it! I live in PA and it's a meat eaters paradise. I had > to move. When and Where is the Veg Summerfest? Guest guest
I didn't have a hard time believing the ox roast, but I did find the wording amazing. Who in his or her right mind associates majestic with roasing over hot coals?? As for them thinking it's a wonderful pasttime, you were right on the money. Here's some more language from the site: " The wonderful pastime of eating an ox is a modern development. Picnics have traditionally been held by the Pa Dutch after the harvest of their crops, but before fall planting. These " harvest feasts " were major social and festive occasions, attracting young and old from the entire community and surrounding countryside. While the women cooked, baked and prepared beverages, the men would put the ox on the spit to roast. It would take 12 hours to cook, then everyone would eat " til they ouched! " " I grew up in Pa. Dutch country, so I know that meat is a big thing. My father loved scrapple! It makes me shudder just to think of it. :-) Karen Oh, I'm sure they thought long and carefully about the word choices!
