Guest guest
Dear Julie in San Diego, Welcome to the group! Veggie Val here. My ex-husband also is a meat-eater who has 50% custody of my 6-y.o. son. We live in MA. Such custody sharing is rather uncommon out here, but if I recall, CA presumes that 50/50 custody is usually in the best interests of the child, so I wonder if it is fairly common there? I'm lacto-ovo as well, although I have become more strict over the years. Have you tried the chocolate soy milks? Richard loves Chocolate Soy Silk, or the Chocolate soy 8-continents brand. Richard is fed the typical American meaty diet when with his dad and dad's live-in girlfriend. He's ovo-lacto vegetarian when with me. Both dad and the girlfriend are overweight, which is so sad (and obviously due to their horrible diet). We try not to battle it out about our different lifestyles, but they have meat at every meal and junky sugary non-nutritive stuff on a regular basis (I found an uneaten Twinkie once in the lunchbox she packed for him--ugh!! I bite my tongue to keep the peace. At least he didn't eat it!) I just try to instill my nutritional and moral values into my son as much as possible. He says he would be a vegetarian all the time if he could, but his dad won't let him. They serve him meat and insist that he clean his plate even after he's full. They make him sit there until he finishes his meat. Even if I was a carnivore, I'd let the kid quit when he is full! What can you do? I tell Richard to talk to his dad about it. If he is met with resistance about his desire not to eat meat, or to quit eating when he is full, then I offer to talk to his dad for him. But I think part of him likes meat and he just wants to please me. He hasn't yet asked me to talk to his dad about it. I think that pressuring him (or his dad) would not be the best choice. He came home from a daycare field trip to Chuck E Cheese this week and said, " Mommy, you'd be so proud of me! I had the cheese pizza, not the pepperoni. " It's a milestone for him to do this on his own--he loves pepperoni. I guess it was a sign that my influence is always with him. Thanks for all your support. Guest guest
Hi Stacey, and thanks for the welcome. I try very hard to enlighten as many people as I can about vegetarianism. With the recent mad cow scare, it seems that people are more willing to listen Karen
