Guest guest
Hello, thought I'd check this out with you guys. We are a vegan family, kids have been vegan since before conception! Sara is 5 and Hayley 2 1/2. We were at the Dr's today as Sara has had a sore throat recently and I commented about her weight - she is very solid! She weighs 55lbs and is 44inches in height. Apparantly over 95%ile for weight and also weight/height ratio. Dr expressed some concern re weight and risk of diabetes, etc. Hayley is tall and solid too but less noticeable. Also of note is that Sara's weight increase has only been in the last 2 years, at age 3 she was 50th percentile for weight and height. I was an overweight child as was my husband so there is likely a genetic component. I never expected this with being vegan though. We are a heavy starch eating family and use too many refined starches and I intend to look at this, the difficulty is in changing a diet that Sara loves - pasta, bread, etc. She does get exercise and is a very active girl. Any thoughts/suggestions would be gratefully received. ---------------*********-----------------------\ -------------------- For a compassionate world, gwynt Gwyneth Treharne ---------------<><><>--------------------------\ -----------------
Guest guest
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only overweight vegan on the planet! I have been vegetarian for like 22 years and vegan for the last 5 or so. I have been heavy my whole life. I am also active, walking the dog twice a day - once for a fast 30 minute walk for exercise and once for a slower 45 minute (sniff and pee) walk LOL! This is our daily ritual unless the weather is REALLY bad, then we do a quicky 20 minute jaunt. I do have fibromyalgia - so I had to give up the jogging due to pain. I'm sorry - not trying to " steal " your post/question - just wanting to relate and also looking for advice. Guest guest
Do not put this child on any diet! Use the vrg.org website/experts to find a dietitian near you who can help your family. With your MD's help, insurance might even pay for the visit(s)! I don't want to freak you out, but parents play a HUFE role in shaping their children's minds when it comes to body image, eating and food relationships. Don't let your kids hear you put down your own body or anyone elses! Start now to help your daughter love her body and have faith that with expert nutritional guidance (Registered Dietitian) and regular, FUN activity, your daughter will not only find her natural body weight but have a healthy body image!! Guest guest
Stepping into my DTR (registered dietetic technician ) shoes now... I agree, do not put her on a diet. The goal with an overweight child is to have them grow into their weight, not to try to lose weight. (In other want her height to catch up to her weight percentile wise.) One simple technique you can use to really get a handle on what/how much she is eating is to keep a food diary. In many cases we eat more than we realize because we don't pay attention to portions. A trip to a dietitian would definitely be worthwhile. Peace, Katie
