Guest guest
OMG! I've got to tell you about the *funniest* conversation I had with a woman in heatlth food store yesterday. The girls and I were in the bulk section getting raw nuts and our hemp cereal. A woman behind me seemed to be waiting on me to finish and I offered to let her get her stuff because I knew I'd be in that one spot for a while. She commented that she was just getting almonds for her husband because his cholesterol is so high. " I worry about how fattening they are though, " she said. " I just read something written by Marilyn Diamond stating that raw nuts are not as fattening as people think. It's the roasted nuts that are fattening. " " Well, " she replied, " my understanding is that nuts are okay for people with normal cholesterol levels, but almonds are the only nuts that are okay for people with high cholesterol. " I didn't say any more. I thought to myself " Atkins person....walk away quietly. " So, when I saw her buying eggs and meat, I couldn't resist. I smiled at her and said laughingly (intending to make a point, mind you), " Well that doesn't seem fair. You get to eat all the meat, eggs and cheese while he subsists on almonds. " " Oh Lord no. These are for him!! He loves this stuff. " It was so obviously ridiculous to me, I didn't say anything else. I couldn't f****** believe it. Raw nuts are bad for cholesterol but eggs meat and cheese are okay. How absurd!! THEN, I was looking for a green drink. The guy I was talking to about it was helpful until I noticed the super green soy mix. I asked about it in comparison to the kyo-green. He said, " no, don't get soy. It's bad for you. Here's a protein drink with whey in it that is much healthier for you. " Ugh! From now on, I'm not talking to *anybody* while I'm shopping!! Guest guest
That makes me think of my dear, misguided MIL. Last winter when dd had the sniffles, MIL's advice was: " you just tell that doctor to give her some antibiotics and tell them that she doesn't eat any meat so she doesn't get all those antibiotics they feed to the cows " ARRGGH! - Lucy Watkins VRG Parents Group Wednesday, July 23, 2003 1:18 PM people drive me batty snip <I thought to myself " Atkins person....walk away quietly. Guest guest
This sounds exactly like what my mother would do. She will buy almonds cause the dietician said to increase her consumption of raw nuts. But then she'll go and eat an entire bag of microwave popcorn with the extra butter. Great diet for high cholesterol, huh?! Soy is bad?! There was just another Canadian study published this week that found that diets high in SOY, oats, and barley and low in saturated fats (what the media is calling a strict vegetarian diet) reduces cholesterol as well as the drugs out there! Here's a link to the story. http://story.news./news?tmpl=story & u=/nm/20030722/wl_canada_nm/canada_h\ ealth_cholesterol_col_1 Some day the others will understand. We need to keep educating them. Guest guest
She wasn't. And I did, but luckily we were talking on the phone at the time! It's funny though, in a sad way, because their whole family basically subsists on meat (everything else is garnish), and they seem to get sick a LOT more often than we do (I could go on and on about the health problems in that family!). At least dh eats vegetarian at home (dd & I are aalllmost vegan). Bonnie - " Lucy Watkins " <lucywatkins Re: people drive me batty OMG! Please please tell me she was joking.
