Guest guest
eeeeeeewwwwww! Yah! Not only is that disgusting, it is..........I can't even think of a word......stinky!! What? Where these people stoned when they came up with this idea? I completely agree with you. No. I don't think you are weird. That is just sick. What the hell ever happened to foot prints, string art, hand prints, paint brushes? Good God Almighty!!! yuck....gotta go get some ginger.....I'm nauseous now.... It's at our church, though not religious in nature, and the church is a progressive one anyway (community suppers are usually vegetarian, they only serve organic shade grown fair trade coffee, etc.) Anyway, so Max and I get to the program today and the children are making " squid prints " . I thought that looked like fun, figuring, as any sane person would, that it was a rubber squid. No - I found out, before Max did the project, which he wasn't interested in anyway, that it was a real (dead) squid. I just don't think that fits in with our values. And I'm not even vegan - I mean, we do have some leather shoes and stuff. But that just seems unnecessary and disrespectful to a fellow living creature and with no good reason. I mean, even if they just found the squid dead on the beach. Am I being weird or are they? Any comments? ps.- When people say veg*n, they mean vegetarian or vegan, right> I have been assuming the * character was like a blank. Guest guest
I'm phasing out of this listserv but before I bid adieu I wanted to let you know I would be outraged, shocked and horrified to see this art project underway. Please note, I'm one of the quiet minority on this site who feels we as a group should be tolerant of others and more accepting of various points of view--less radical. However, this crosses the line. Now I wouldn't bellow at anyone at the program or make a scene but I would make my voice/concern heard with the organizers/planners. If they don't see your way I think I'd take my little boy (Jack)out of the event for that day. Regardless of the end result or eating philosophy, I don't think playing with a dead anything is healthy, emotionally or physically! Guest guest
I think it' repulsive! Killing an animal for food is one thing, killing it to smear with paint is another. UGHHH. Guest guest
Yeah, that's pretty gross. Often times I find as a vegetarian that non-vegis have a hard time grasping concepts such as the one you found yourself in. I would approach it this way perhaps...is it healthy for the children to be using a dead squid as an art tool? What about germs, bacteria, etc. growing on the poor little corpse? Doesn't seem healthy to me. That kind of approach has helped advance a fair number of animal rights campaigns and widen the support base of certain issues. As for the veg*n question, yes. That's used to lump us all into one simple " title " . Saves extra typing. " The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans anymore than black people were made for white, or women created for men. Guest guest
To me, squid art is how live squid use their own ink to escape peril. Guest guest
It's a respectful way to not speak/write the name of one's deity. > Actually, G-d is different, it's about not letting the word get > deleted/destroyed. Liz
