Any suggestions? Tracie, I don't exactly have a source for you, but a thought - babies learn to walk best when they're *barefoot* and " walker " shoes are not a good idea. The only time I put shoes on my son was when he was outside on rough terrain (we had a crushed-shell driveway at the time), and for that I think we had maybe some baby gap shoes that were non-leather and had just a padded, not rubber, sole. Likewise, we had some booties from Carter's that were padded. It was enough padding to protect his feet but not so much he couldn't sense the contact with the group. If I knew the floor was intolerably dirty, I put socks with " grips " (rubbery letters or whatnot) on him, since we had a tile floor. Now, Gap and probably Carters (and other big-name baby labels) are probably not free of *human* cruelty..... You might check ecobaby.com, maybe they've added non-leather padders....? Or vegan sources such as pangea, veganessentials, etc. Good luck. ~Doh ---------- All beings tremble before violence. All fear death, all love life. See yourself in others. Then whom can you hurt? Guest guest
No shoes are the best shoes for new walkers, going shoeless lets the foot develop in the most healthy and natural way. As for protection for outside play, I haven't found one that naturally lets the foot develop and protects from the elements that isn't cruelty free. We use Robeez which are leather, but the best thing for a young developing foot. Before my babies walk we just use regular ol' socks and booties. I had many problems with my feet and the growth plates in them from my mother putting me in cheap shoes, I had to make weekly trips to the foot doctor and still, to this day have problems with my feet. It is a tough decision to make and after I did the research, I cried. Sara - " Tracey " <weety Friday, August 01, 2003 11:03 PM Baby shoes > Maybe someone here can help. Thanks for all the advice, we have been using just socks with the grips or barefeet, too. I think the canvas and rubber keds are a good idea, and I will check out some of the places that were mentioned, too. Thanks! Guest guest
Yeah, I have some of those too, but they aren't that great for running around out here, we live on a dirt road. We use the padders until they are running around outside. Guest guest
The bad part for me was deciding that the soft leather shoes would be the best thing for my kids feet. My son also inherited my wide foot and it is next to impossible to find a shoe that fits him the right way width wise without getting one that is way too long Sara - " Tracey " <weety Tuesday, August 05, 2003 9:41 PM Re: Baby shoes > > > It is a tough decision to make and after I did the research, I > cried. > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > Oh no? I considered posting this comment, Doh, but I'm glad you did it for me 8-). Be well, Hadass in Winnipeg, Ima to barefoot babies.
Guest guest
When my sons were learning to walk and toddling, we lived across the street from a Pediatric Podiatrist. He said the best thing we could do for them was to let them stay barefoot as much as possible, especially walking on grass (it's soft, pliable and forms to their little feet). He said the only reason to ever put any kind of shoe on them was, as Doh pointed out, if there was danger of them stepping on something harmful. Then choose a shoe that is protective, but not hard and restrictive. ~Marvelyn > I don't exactly have a source for you, but a thought - babies learn to walk > best when they're *barefoot* and " walker " shoes are not a good idea.
