I just joined this group and am in desperate need of help and advice please.

My 12 yr old daughter has been wanting to be a vegetarian and I kept saying no

(because I was scared it wouldn't be healthy for her) until she was eating a

chicken strip and started cying. I asked her why she was crying and it was

because of the death of the chicken...that was it. I told her to put it down

and we, together, would go vegetarian. My problem is I don't know what to feed

her. I bought some Morningstar ground up vegetable beef and combined it with

beans and rice, and it was good. We got the Morningstar Beef Patties and liked

them but now I'm stuck. Please help!!! I would really appreciate any tips,

suggestions, recipes, and help you all could give me. She is lactose

intolerant but I bought some Lactaid yesterday. We are buying free range eggs

now too.

Thank you !!

Katie, I think you found the right place for info. Below are just a few

sites for all kinds of recipes. There are so many books out there, also. Visit

any cookbook section, and see all the vegetarian books out there! Good Luck,

Tracy

Katie,

YEA!!!! You're a great mom. :) I wanted to go veg when I was young and was

FORCED to eat beef or chicken every night. I still remember that.

I'm raising my 17 month old son on a vegetarian diet. It can be done! In fact,

she'll be even healthier now!! :) There is a lot of literature out there and

I'm sure people will respond with sites and other information.

Welcome to the group!

Hi;

I am a mom of a 13 yr old girl - Our whole family is

vegetarian. And in general girls are very picky

regardless of their eating habbits. Don't get

preoccupied with combining proteins it is not

necessary - Sit down together and write a list of

different foods that you both like that are non-meat -

Write down some things that you like that are meat.

Then review the list.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to remember that it is not just

about not eating meat it is eating quality and healthy

vegetarian foods - Don't go with Morningstar - they

have some of the worst ingredients of all prefab

vegetarian substitutes - go with Boca Products and

Garden Grillers etc. READ LABELS!!

Vegi Burgers & tofu pups are great for new comers.

Pasta and sauce with vegetables, Salads, Grilled

vegetables of all types. Cous Cous & quinoa are easy

grains to prepare and come in prepared mixes. There is

so much stuff - check out your loacal supermarket and

Natural food stores they will have tons of stuff for

you to experiment with!!

Try tofu - don't be scared of it - it is actually

tasty and easy to make. Try eating Brown stuff

instead of white (EG rice and bread) (this can be a

challenge -but it is healthier

If your daughter likes BAked beans - try tacos using

Bush's Vegetarian Baked Beans with Soy Cheese in taco

Shells. try Soy milk - I recommend Vita Soy - it is a

little on the sweet side, but it tastes great -My 9

and 13 year old loves it. It also is fortified with B

proteins and Calcium.

A vegetarian diet is a safe and healthy way of life -

respect the fact that she is not just doing it for

health reason but for her love of animals - that is a

beautiful reason to become a vegetarian - embrace the

fact that your daughter is so in tuned with the life

around her - and applaud her for her beliefs.

You will find that a vegetarian lifestyle is EASY and

the food is just as varied and healthier than a

traditional Meat eating diet. I do recommend that she

eats fortified cereal w/ soy milk and extra calcium is

usually a good thing for any 12 year old, but you will

both be fine!!

You are in the right place 8-).

One good place to look is in the archives of the FatFree mailing list.

The list itself is unfortunately moribund, but the archives are a

fabulous collection of vegetarian recipes. Check out www.fatfree.com.

I think an important mindshift you need to make is away from trying to

substitute for meat. Instead, try to think of protein sources - whole

wheat bread, lentils, beans, soy, etc. If you eat dairy products you

will not need to worry about protein at all.

You could also look into using soymilk instead of Lactaid - there are

many different brands, so keep trying until you find a flavour she likes.

Good luck! You'll find your own health improves, too. My DH went along

for the ride reluctantly, but now he would never go back.

Be well, Hadass in Winnipeg.
