Anybody make their own applesauce? I am planning on making some but

am not sure which varieties of apples are best for good applesauce.

I live in California, so any varieties that grow in California would

be best, so that I can try and buy local. Thanks.

Hi,

This isn't traditional " applesauce " , but it's a great quick and easy

alternative called Fruit Salsa. The chips are optional - great for an

appetizer or dessert, but you can eat the salsa just like applesauce. I

usually use gala apples, but any kind will work.

Fruit Salsa & Chips

This makes for an excellent appetizer, a fabulous dessert, or a healthy

snack! Very easy! Kids can also eat this just like applesauce.

1. Fruit Salsa

Put in medium bowl:

2 apples, finely chopped

1 10 oz. bag frozen organic strawberries, chopped

2 kiwi, peeled & chopped

Add a little orange juice or guava juice if needed for consistency.

(I chop each type of fruit individually in a food processor to save time.

Mix well. Refrigerate.

2. Tortilla Chips

Wet 8-12 flour tortilla shells - just hold under the faucet and then shake

off excess water. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Cut into triangles.

Separate and place in single layer on cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for

8 minutes. Cool and store in air-tight container.

I hope you enjoy it!

I made some with red delicious apples and it turned out very tasty. I just

added a bit of cinnamon to them and yummmmm!

Rachael,

This is dependant on your tastes. Do you prefer a sweet sauce or a tart sauce.

I've made applesauce with Granny Smith apples and I love it. Though I prefer

the tart taste.

You can use macintosh or galas if you want a sweeter sauce.

I don't know the varieties in CA. I was spoiled when I lived in NY state and

know the varieties here on the east coast.

Peace,

Laura

Yes, that is how I was planning on doing it. Its actually a family

recipe/method of making applesauce that I have but it doesnt include

which varieties of apples are best for applesauce. I actually looked

on the internet yesterday and came up with McIntosh, Galas, Fujis,

and Braeburns as being good for applesauce - though I know there are

others too. I will probobly use at least three varieties, maybe four.

Thanks for the apple salsa recipe. Can't wait to try

it.

http://www.lyndfruitfarm.com/ohio.htm

Here's a link to an apple guide. It is for Ohio apples

but the varieties of apples are listed and which are

best for pies, sauce, etc.

Our favorite apples are Melrose. They make the best

pies. I am not sure how hard they are to find outside

of Ohio. In OH we get them in later in the apple

season.

Peace,
