Guest guest
Hi, Does anyone have some insight about dental sealants? Our pediatric dentist wants to seal my 7 year old's permanent molars because they have deep groves in them. Are they safe? Thanks so much! Guest guest
I swear by them! I've never heard anything to indicate they aren't safe. I'm pretty certain it's the same or similar material to enamal-colored fillings. They just provide an even, non-porous surface that decay can't get stuck in or adhere to. If your daughter has deep grooves, particularly, I would resoundingly recommend sealants. There is no kind of discomfort or anesthesia required and it's very quick. Much easier than getting a cavity fixed later. ~Marvelyn Hi, Does anyone have some insight about dental sealants? She says that it's better to get the type that uses heat rather than time to set....for some bizarre reason, a form of estrogen is released during the timed procedure. Her take on the subject is that the preventative nature of the procedure is preferable to the more invasive procedures necessary when a cavity forms. FWIW, she's a holistic practitioner, so I trust that her recommendation indicates a reasonably high level of safety, but more than that I can't say. Guest guest
connie, I'm almost 30 and i had my molars sealed when i was in grade school and it kept me from getting cavities. in fact until i got pregnant last year i've had no cavities. now i have 5 due to morning sickness and all the stomach acid that came up. however, not where my teeth were sealed. hope that helps a little. good luck. plur christine Connie Bendickson <c.bendickson wrote: Hi, Does anyone have some insight about dental sealants? Guest guest
Hi connie, I'll be 36 next month and had sealants applied to my molars when I was in 8th grade or so. There is still a lot of the material left and they definitely helped protect my teeth. I had 3 (UGH) cavities after the birth of my first child but that was a result of my post- partum hormones swings swinging the good bacteria in my mouth out of balance. Two of those were in unsealed teeth. I've been cavity free for 4 years now. I would feel comfortable about having sealants applied to the teeth of my own children. Guest guest
I WISH that someone had told me about dental sealants for my son. He is almost four and has deep grooves in his molars. I was told by one dentist that they don't like to see kids until they are at least three, so I didn't take him until this year, something that I regret terribly. He had nine cavities because of the grooves and had to have one of his teeth pulled because it was so bad. It was hard for both of us for him to have all of the work done that he did. I would definitely go with the sealants. Guest guest
Laura, Could you please send this information to me, too? My kids have dental appointments in a couple of weeks and the dentist suggested sealants for my 5 yr-old at the last visit... Thanks! Angela VAP79 wrote: I have a great wholistic pediatric dentist. Guest guest
Do they seal baby teeth or just the permanent teeth? I have only heard of this from one person I used to work with. Her mother was a dental hygenist and had her teeth sealed when she was young. She was 30 and had never had any cavities. I asked my dentist about it and he said he had never heard of it. Which I find extremely hard to believe since he has every new, high-tech piece of equipment the minute it comes out. I suspect that not he doesn't " know " about it because he wouldn't get so much business filling cavities. Please send me any information. Thanks! Guest guest
Most dentists don't seal baby teeth, mostly because insurance won't cover it. However, if you are willing to pay for it out-of-pocket and you request it, there is no reason not to seal them. If you have child who is extra suseptable to cavities due to a lack of enamal or extremely deep grooves, it would be worth considering. It's cheaper and and painless, unlike a filling. At least, this is what our dentists (both pediatric and family dentist) have told us. IMO, if your dentist truly has never heard of sealants, it's time to shop for a new dentist. They aren't something new; my 15yo dd had them 10 years ago and never had a cavity. ~Marvelyn Do they seal baby teeth or just the permanent teeth? Never heard of it? He's gotta be lying. Sealants are commonplace. I wouldn't trust that dentist for a second after that. Most dentists recommend them, I had a couple teeth sealed, they didn't get cavities, other teeth did. Getting amalgams (the white fillings, as opposed to the mercury), whether as seals or as fillings, exposes your body to some chemicals and fumes. IMO, they should only be done on a few molars that are particularly deep, or the back ones that are so hard to reach. ~Doh --------- " There is *never* a good reason not to be as loving as you can possibly be.
