Guest guest
Does anyone have any suggestions for healthy treats for my son's preschool Halloween party? The teacher requested something with a Halloween theme (i.e., orange and black) and as healthy as possible. I can think of lots of fruity, whole-grainy kinds of things I'm not sure of how to make them look like Halloween. Thanks, Terry
Guest guest
Some ideas: You could make the fruity whole grainy things and package with a Halloween theme - a special treat bag or something. Make fruit skewers w/ grapes, apples, melons - whatever - get some small pie pumpkins and drill holes in the pumpkin. Place the skewers in the holes enough for each child at the table. I once saw someone hollow out oranges, carve faces in them and then fill them with black grapes - cute, but LOTS of work I imagine. I am having a toddler Halloween party, so I will keep thinking about this. Let me know if you have any good ideas. Guest guest
I cooked some trailmix (dates/figs/raisins/walnuts) in apple juice to make a dessert once; when it cooled it, made a chewy dark candy-like material that took the shape of its container. You could spoon the hot mix into halloween muffin tins. If the shapes were dipped in chocolate after cooling, the end result would be much like a 'Chunky' candy bar. You could take the new Dole mandarin orange slices in veggie gel cups, take off the lid and make jackolantern-ish faces with chocolate or carob chips. Be kind. Be of good cheer. Guest guest
Apricots are orange. You could get boxes of diced apricots. Try baking or molding your treats in the shape of halloween things (cats, bats, ghosts, pumpkins, leaves, etc). You could do this with cookie cutters. This is a good alternative if you want to avoid the black and orange dyes and food colorings. Hope it helps. However, I am serving a punch that the kids at your sons school might like. I've frozen Sharkies (which are vegetarian gummi sharks)in grape juice in the ice cube trays. I'm going to put them in a mixture of grapejuice and seltzer water. If you like, you can also add peeled grapes and apples. I've got a recipe for vegan sugar cookies if you would like it. Its not that terrible for you (compared to traditional sugar cookies), but it does have margarine and unrefined sugar. If you have a snack that you'd like to serve and ane not sure how to make Halloween, please let me know and I'll help you think of a way. Have fun!! Guest guest
SPIDERS! Stick two round crackers together with peanut butter, and poke 8 stick pretzels (or thin carrot strips) around the sides for legs. Use peanut butter to stick two raisins on top for the eyes. Another idea is to make finger sandwiches (filling of your choice- PB & J?) and cut them with a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter. Guest guest
FWIW, Dancing Deer Baking Co. makes natural food colorings. I've seen them at Whole Foods.
