my baby has purple bags under her eyes

my 6 mo old daughter woke up with purple bags under her eyes yesterday. they are

still there. she has had congestion for about a month and a half now as well. we

haven't taken her the pediatrition because he said she didn't need to come in

because she hasn't had a fever. she still eats the same, sleeps the same, and

plays the same. she's a tiny bit crankier and a tiny more serious than usual.

she is constantly pulling off the breast and getting back again seconds later.

she is also teething though and is super interested in looking around. she

generally completes the feeding though and is never fussy at the end of a

feeding. could these changes and the purple under her eyes be due to

allergies????

and is it food or outdoor or pet allergies??? we have 2 cats but she's been

close to them she was born. i haven't been eating anything different. we do live

near the wildfires in CA so the air is kind of dirtier. and her father and i

have been experiencing allergies for about a month and a half. (the same amount

of time as her congestion.) i'm just worried because of the purple all of a

sudden. can anyone offer some help or advice?

peace,

christine

If she's pulling off the breast, she probably can't breath. You might want

to change her positioning. My son, almost a year got his first cold a month

ago and was having a hard time nursing. He, of course, is set in his ways when

it comes to nursing so I had to maneuver it where he thought he was in the

same position.

I don't know if it's allergies or not, but you should try a cool mist

humidifier at night when your daughter sleeps.

David had the same symptoms. We read that they were called " allergic shiners "

and he had them from 6 months until we finally found out what the allergen

was--dairy.

Good luck.

My son started getting puffiness and purple circles around his eyes when he was

an infant. He was later diagnosed with multiple food allergies and seasonal

allergies, as well. His eyes get really puffy when he is having other symptoms

of seasonal allergies.

We couldn't find anyone around here who would do food allergy testing before age

2 -- apparently it is not highly accurate before then. Our pediatrician

prescribed zyrtec for the seasonal allergies when my son was not much older than

your daughter. It helped quite a bit. We use a homeopathic remedy now, which

works just as well.

Hope your baby feels better soon,

Angela

Hi, Christine--

I'm also in CA, also live with cats (5!) and my

7-month old also has bags under his eyes most of the

time. They developed about a month or so ago and

darken noticably when he's sleepy. I haven't worried

about it, as no problems have accompanied this feature

(he's had congestion off and on, as have mom and dad).

I don't think they were there suddenly, though, but

rather emerged over a few weeks. I have just chalked

it up to his skin a) being ridiculously fair and b)

evolving as it is supposed to (it occurred around the

same time his facial birthmarks and " stork bites "

*finally* began to fade).

This does not sound like food allergy, which I

understand is usually a rash/hives on the face or a

diaper rash that develops very soon after eating a new

food.

I have been told by most docs/child experts that

environmental allergies don't develop until later (1

year or more). Also, recent studies show that exposure

to 2 or more cats or dogs in infancy actually reduces

the likelihood of developing *any* allergies later on

(good news for us animal lovers!).

It may be that she is sensitive (but not technically

allergic) to the same things that you and your husband

are, and which have been bothering you lately (pollen,

molds, etc.)

If you do call your ped, I'd be curious to hear the

diagnosis.

My guess is food allergies. My husband had big dark bags under his eyes

and fatigue and sinus problems for years. doc after doc diagnosed

seasonal outdoor allergies and dust/mold/pet allergies and prescribed

claritin, allegra, and the like, which never did very much good. Finally

a homeopathic/md/nutritionist did some work with him to get to the root

of his allergies. He did a month of detox/elimination diet then tried

adding back possible allergens to check for a reaction. Almost as soon

as he ate wheat, soy, or dairy he got the dark eye-bags and other

symptoms back. It would take almost a week without the offending food

for them to go away again. Now that we have identified his problem foods

and eliminated them he feels so much better, looks better, and has more

energy. Still has hay fever but not so bad now. Hope you find a doc who

will take the time to check your dd for allergies.

Oh, I just reread your post and see she is 6 mo, in which case you

probably haven't given her any solids anyway. In which case my theory is

probably useless! If you are, on the other hand feeding her, it's

probably too early for her and hence the reactions. Try again later.

Especially wait until age 1 for the common allergens like dairy, wheat,

and soy.

Hi Christine,

Both of my children (ds 2 1/2 yrs, dd 8mos!) get the circles when they are

tired. I've never even thought of allergies. We have 2 dogs, but since the

circles only appear when the babes are tired, I never linked it to anything

else. I don't think they appeared until after they were each around 5 mos or

so.

Good Luck!
