Guest guest
Thanks for the welcome, glad to know you'll accept me here! I didn't really feel the need for support while my kids were younger. But now my oldest is at school, it seems more of an issue. She's invited to so many parties and I keep having to tell the other mums, that she is veggie, that she doesn't eat fish etc. Then I sometimes have to go into why she's veggie, whether I'll let her eat meat if she wants to etc. Has anyone else found their child's school/playgroup has had to be told several times about them being veggie? I have put details of their dietary requirements on forms, but the staff seem to 'forget'. Both my kids have had meat sausages put on their plates at playgroup parties (which I swiftly removed!). At school, my older daughter was given something containing meat and was told she could pick the meat out. I was really angry about that and have been assured that it won't happen again. (I don't know what they'd do if we were vegan!) Just wondering if your choices are more accepted in the US? Life must be much more easy for meat eaters! I've always been one for a challenge though ;-) Lisa.
Guest guest
I find that a few people are considerate of our diet, and pay attention to it, when my kids are with them. I do live in the San Francisco Bay Area, though. I have also run across numerous people that have to be reminded several times a day that we are vegetarian. One woman keeps asking my son (when he is invited over) if he would like chicken nuggets for dinner! We both just gently reminder her we are vegetarian. Then another family keeps asking if we eat fish and eggs! We have know them each for years now! Fortunately, my 3 children have gotten past the stage where they just eat and don't know necessarily know what is on their plate. But, there have been challenges. Good Luck and always remind people what your dietary decisions are. --Tracy > Has anyone else found their child's school/playgroup has had to be > told several times about them being veggie? Guest guest
- Lisa- I'm going to be going through the same thing very soon. We are moving to Pennsylvania(this area not known for progressive beliefs) and it's going to be a challenge. We have always lived on a farm in the middle of no where and now we'll be in a neighborhood with potentially nosey but well-meaning neighbors. I'll have to practice how I'm going to explain things when my daughter (2 1/2 yrs) goes to playgroups, etc. I wish I could offer you suggestions but I have no clue what I'm going to do. I guess it's just one of those things we good people have to deal with. Are you in England? Are there veg groups you could join? Guest guest
Lisa, I am amazed that here on the East coast (much more conservative than the West)the only thing I've had to watch are items that contain gelatin since most folks don't know what it's made of or what is likely to coantain it. I must confess, when they ask me why we don't eat gelatin and I tell them what it is I get a bit of smug satisfaction (that I would only share with other vegetarians and vegans) in how grossed out they are. You mentioned how it must be easier for the meat eaters, only until they get colon cancer.
