I just have a couple of questions. First of all, what

does 'dd' and 'dh' stand for, I see them used

repeatedly and have been wondering for a while.

Secondly, does anyone have any suggestions for

switching a 10 year old from cow's milk to soy? He

says he doesn't like it but I'm sure its just because

he isn't accustomed to it. My 5 yr old and I drink

only soy, although none of us are exclusively vegan.

I'm trying to slowly work my way towards vegan and

this has been kind of a roadblock. He doesn't drink a

lot of milk, mostly only in cereal and an occasional

cup of chocolate milk, and I've been buying organic

milk for him since at least that is a little healthier

(no pesticides/antibiotics, etc.) but would love to

stop buying it all together.

Laurie,

how abt home-made almond milk?? Soak abt 10 almonds overnite, peel off skin

(or leave them on and strain later), blend with 1-2 cups water, add molasses

if you wish. As dd grew older, I added other things like almond butter,

tahini, liquid vitamin, etc.

hth!!

Best,

Janis

This doesn't come from personal experience, since my son has been vegan from

birth. But, I would try mixing the soy with the cow milk for a while, each

week adding more soy. I would also suggest using rice milk as an alternate. The

taste is a little more mild than the soy.

Hope this helps.

Peace,

Laura

When my family made the switch from dairy milk to soymilk, we mixed dairy

and soy together until we developed a taste for soymilk. Then we kept

tapering down the amount of dairy milk until we eventually got rid of it all

together. Also, vanilla flavor was our favorite at the beginning. Now we

find it too sweet and we like plain better. We transitioned from dairy to

soy, but I think it may be even easier to go from dairy to ricemilk.

Ricemilk has a more neutral taste and has a more consistency more like dairy

- soy is thicker. I hope that helps . . . just keep at it - it's worth the

effort!

Shirley,

" dd " stands for darling daughter, " dh " darling husband and " ds "

darling son.

When we first made the switch to soy from cow's milk we drank

vanilla soy. After a year or so we were used to the soy and the

vanilla tasted too sweet so we were ready for the plain soy. Always

enriched tough. I would also recommend you try different brands.

Everyone I know (including our family) seems to have thier own brand

preference.

Good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Have you tried Silk? They make a delicious chocolate soymilk. There are other

brands that make other flavors as well, such as strawberry. Have you tried

making him chocolate milk from soymilk w/o him knowing that you are using soy?

Have you tried rice milk or almond milk?

I love Silk! And so does my daughter. It is what our stores carry here. The

vanilla is wonderful, and goes well with oatmeal and other hot cereals. I

haven't seen the strawberry flavor, but will keep my eye out for it.
