I live in Wichita, KS. We have a Wholefoods store here, and couple other health

food stores. According to SRS, I don't qualify for food stamps. I really

dislike shopping at Wal-Mart because of the way they treat their workers. I'm

trying to find ways to cut expenses in other parts of my life, like taking up

knitting so I can make clothes instead of buying them. I've been considering

cloth diapers, but to get all the supplies I need to start takes quite a chunk

of change.

Have you checked ebay for cloth diapers? I bought a bunch of them there for

a fairly low price. I also knit and have made some wool soakers for my son,

but I also have some cheapo covers that work great from Dappi, they are only

a couple of bucks a piece and they work! You can always start with prefolds

and pins, they aren't that expensive, then slowly build your stash of the

nicer ones. We have saved tons with using cloth>

I used cloth dipes and am a HUGE advocate. Try looking at online

auctions for supplies. Ebay has some and there's a great auction at

mothersnature.com Better for your wallet, so much better for the

environment and much better for your baby too. I wish you luck.

We used cloth diapers too. They are so much easier to use, you never have to

run to the store and go buy more, at the drop of a hat. I think getting them,

and the covers, I spent $100.00, maybe $150.00. That was all. I haven't had to

replace anything yet. I bought them online. I can't remember the store

anymore, but I just put in cloth diapers, and many stores came up. But they can

get pretty expensive, if you aren't careful. The diapers I got were organic

cotton, a little more expensive than some of the others. But my daughter has

worn the same diapers since she was born, and she is now 20 months. No stains,

haven't had to replace anything. Of course, the covers, you do have to replace

with size, but that is only about every three-four months, at first. We also

used cloth wipes and water, rather than wipies. All I used for those are the

baby washcloths, that cost about $3.00 for a package of three. We got five

packs for the diapering.

Richelle,

Mambo Sprouts then should be able to help you a bit, as I mentioned before,

since they work with WFM to put their coupon book together.

I don't know about the state of KS and their aid criteria, but I had to

appeal my application for state aid since I was turned down the first time.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, you know.

Are you a coupon clipper? I have no idea if your local WF would do this,

but you can ask: find the manager of the magazines (probably the Whole Body

or Nutrition dept), tell her/him that you're working on a tight budget and

ask them if they'd consider saving you veggie magazines after they've torn

the covers off to get credit for them. Then you can get the coupons out of

them. I'm guessing they have at least vegetarian times, probably veggie

life and maybe others.

If not Whole Foods, ask at another health food store. Or got to the library

and get the coupons out of their issues (I know, that is questionable, but

believe me, libraries get no benefit from the coupons, the companies know

some issues go to libraries, and if not a low-income single mom, then who

deserves them?).

Cloth diapering is a noble idea, but frankly, if you're single, I don't know

how you'd keep up with the laundry. I was single and SAH while I

cloth-diapered, and it was a lot of work to dump the poops promptly, do the

cloth diapers separate from other wash, fold/stack.... I'm single and

working full-time now - there's no way I'd keep up. Anyway, if you are

still considering it, I used cheap prefolds (and a cut up thick flannel for

doublers). I got good covers after several cheap attempts (I ended up with

MotherEase covers, which are lovely), and they lasted long enough, I guess.

Do you have anything to barter with another mom who sews diapers? Maybe if

you get good at knitting... :)

Actually, I found that making my own clothes ( I don't knit, but I can sew

with a machine) was more expensive than buying. And *much* more than buying

at thrift stores. And again, once I returned to WOH I gave up even sewing

buttons on.... Is there something I'm missing - how do you have to learn to

knit?

Well, I'll keep thinking. I really am not the best example. I spend what I

want to on food - and skimp on everything else. I don't have a garden (who

has time for that?), other than steaming veggies and rice I don't cook from

scratch (who has time for that?), I don't prepare my lunches at home to

bring to work, or even get myself off of $2 mochas and on to 25 cent

coffee....

email me offlist if you like.

Doh

feeling really wasteful now.

I used wash cloths and water instead of wipes also. I'm sure we

saved a lot of $ with that. It's so much nicer to use a warm wash

cloth when it's cold out those wipes are definitely not

biodegradable. Good money saving hint Melanie.
