It is really gross! > Acutally, I am predominantly vegan and am on the South Beach Diet (SBD). It really needn't be gross! Although the SBD does curb carbohydrates (something that often makes up too high a percentage of veg*ns diets), it doesn't require lots of meat, and is, in fact, substantially different from Atkins. For example, Atkins pushes meats and saturated fats and severaly restricts carbs. SBD discourages " bad " fats and actually allows quite a bit of healthy carbs. While the SBD book has just a bit of information on following the diet as a vegetarian, there is an extensive, varied, and healthy vegetarian plan on the SBD website. SBD is also currently working on a vegan plan, I think. There are tons of great veggie recipes on SBD. Lots of people mistakenly lump Atkins and SBD together. I find SBD to be very veg-friendly and healthy. My $0.02. Karen Search - Find what you’re looking for faster http://search.

Guest guest
Thanks for that info Karen. I often wondered about that. I know several people doig the south beach diet who aren't veggie and their description made it sound close to an Atkins diet. Guest guest
Karen, That is good to know, that it needn't be gross. What I have seen my mom eat, since she has been on this diet is though. She is allowed bread, and some carbs, though, but mostly she eats meat, of any kind, from anywhere. I guess it depends on the person, and their eating habits, that determines whether these diets are gross or not. My mom has always been a big fried meat eater, so too is her diet. She chose this diet, from what she told me, because she didn't have to change her eating habits, too much. You are supposed to avoid all fried foods (as well as anything else high in saturated fats) at every stage of the plan. I have to wonder if mom actually read the SBD book -- it sounds to me like she have made up her own eating plan! For most people with a typical (unhealthy) American diet, SBD is quite a change. Even for me, whose diet was relatively healthy (in substance, if not always in portion size), it has made a difference. I eat many, many, *many* more vegetables than I used to, and am using the old veg*n staples (legumes, soy products)much more creatively. Guest guest
Karen, You could be right. My mom has always had horrible eating habbits, and they have gotten worse, when she married my stepfather, 13 years ago. I personally haven't read the SBD books, so I only drew my conclusions to how I saw her eating, and it seemed much more fried. Melanie Karen Hirsch <karen_hirsch wrote: > My mom has > always been a big fried meat eater, so too is her > diet. Guest guest
" diana rhodes " <dianarhodes > I was wondering if maybe u all could share a > few recipes? Hi, Diana-- I'm not sure it's really possible to have *no* carbs, but there are lots of *low*-carb dinners. Are there particular ingredients you would like to work with? I could foward on a few SBD recipes if you give me some general idea about what you like. I don't like cooking big elaborate meals, so I tend to rotate between a few tried-and-true staples: --Stir-fry with veggies and baked tofu or seitan (vary the ingredients/sauces to keep interesting) -- Bean/soy meat chili or soup -- Curry: chickpea, spinach, other veggies -- Big salads with beans -- Pizza made with Portobello mushrooms as the crust; lasagna with portobellos standing in for the noodles -- " Pasta " made from spaghetti squash with tomato sauce, sauteed veggies, soy " meatballs " , soy parmasean -- Scrambled tofu omelettes with soy sausage (I sometimes like to eat breakfast for dinner!) -- Lettuce wrap sandwiches with soy meats/soy cheese (butter leaf lettuce works well) -- PM snacks: nuts, avocado, hummus Hope this starts you off well... Guest guest
I tried a version of this too. Actually, it was just not eating carbs after 5-that was it. It was tough. Are you lacto-ovo? I don't do eggs which limited the selection. I tried tofu-lots of it. Stir fry, scramble, you name it. with fresh veg. And 'meal salads' with chick peas (hmmm...carbs?), sunflower seeds, feta, veggies, etc. It didn't last long for me. What I tried to do instead was limit carbs-a little rice with lots of curry or a few pita chips with loads of hummus and veg. It was more realistic for me. also, not eating (after 5, 6, or 7 depeding on the source0 is supposed to be helpful in weight loss or maintenance.
