Guest guest
My son's preschool sent home a note today that a child in his class has head lice. Nothing in his hair so far, but I want to have a plan in mind just in case. Does anyone have any experience with this? I haven't checked into any drugstore treatments that have been recommended, but I'd be willing to bet they are pretty toxic, not just to the mites. I'd prefer a more natural option if anyone knows of any. My husband has started drinking soymilk!! I'm hoping my boys will want to be like daddy. My older son was drinking it for awhile, but he has slipped back to regular milk. I will not give up! Thanks for any advice. Peace, Laura
Guest guest
We went through this not too long ago when my niece brought it to my mother's house while my son was there. We used 1,2,3 clean, it is non toxic and all natural, we did use it " just in case " because we never found anything. I did read on Mothering that putting olive oil on the scalp will smother everything and leave you lice free. We have gotten a letter for the second yr. in a row about lice. We have not had any problems here at home. I can tell you that there are ways to cope that are not as toxic as the mainstream treatments. One of my friends had outbreaks twice with her kids, so this is from her experience. The biggest pain of treatment is time. You have to wash all the linens very often, and brushes and pillows and clean couch cushions. The next piece is not as time consuming. They do sell natural treatments for lice at the health food store. I have seen them at the ones near us. The time factor is looking through your child's head to search for the eggs. The treatment is with a comb and product. Hope this helps. Peace, Laura in Maryland
Guest guest
I don't know how natural this is.. and my recommendation is sort of second hand..so I'm sure how accurate what I'm saying is.. but if you boil tobacco in hot water then let it cool so that it is still hot but will not burn him (warmer than lukewarm). Wash his hair in the tobacco it should look kind of like tea. Let it set for a while.. like 20 to 30 minutes.. then rinse out. Rewash with regular shampoo. Something about the tobacco I think that lice don't like for some reason. Anyway I don't think you can get cancer from washing your hair in tobacco. progressive7862 <allens717 wrote:My son's preschool sent home a note today that a child in his class has head lice. Guest guest
We recently went through this at my daughter's school. There are some homeopathic remedies available at mainstream health food stores. Lice-Freeeee is the name. RID has also come out with a non-toxic/alternative version. Tea Tree Oil helps loosen the nits and eggs from the hair shaft. Shampoo with tea tree oil and use a lice comb to remove all the fun stuff. Blow dry your child's hair. This will make it uncomfortable for any of the critters if they are in there. Please don't freak out. The way our school handled it was amazing. The kids did not feel shamed. That is the biggest part of it to me. It's not about any kid being dirty. Since we are in such a small school, those children who checked out clean stayed at school. The others left until it was under control. Wash clothing and dry it. Same with sheets and pillows. I steam cleaned our mattress. The heat does good work. Read read read. There's lots of info on the internet. Lucy progressive7862 <allens717 wrote: My son's preschool sent home a note today that a child in his class has head lice. Guest guest
Luckily, I have not had to deal with this matter yet. Valerie Ann Worwood, author of " The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy " suggests brushing the hair vigorously and treating with any of the following oils: rosemary, geranium, lavender, eucalyptus, or lemon. For prevention, she suggests mixing equal parts of rosemary, lavender, and lemon. Add two drops of the synergistic blend to the final rinse water. If lice already exist, mix equal proportions of rosemary, lavender, and geranium. She says to add 27 drops of this blend to 1 oz. melted beeswax and 2 oz. castor oil, but I am sure you could add it to whatever you have on hand (including hair conditioner). Anyway, it is to be rubbed into the scalp and left in the hair overnight. Laurel Vukovic also gives suggestions in " 1001 Natural Remedies " . She lists essential oils of rosemary and lavender as treatment also. She also suggests using shampoo w/ neem in it and adding 3 drops of thyme essential oil to that. After that rinse the hair with 2c warm water, 2c apple cider vinegar, 6 drops rosemary, 6 drops lavender. She suggests leaving the treatments in the hair and covering with a shower cap. I would also assume that you should add some of these oils to the laundry. If you have carpet, you may need to treat it too. I hope this helps. progressive7862 <allens717 wrote: My son's preschool sent home a note today that a child in his class has head lice.
