Guest guest
How about trying some " fake sausages " or something. There are also Betty Crocker bacon bits that are vegan! Guest guest
I'd try smoked tofu, depending on the recipe. Barbara --- Katie Mangan <kmangan wrote: > I need to pick some brains here. Guest guest
Katie This is just a thought but what about veggie bouillion cubes. They add lots of flavour to my soups, etc. You can buy low or no sodium. I think they may even have beef and chicken flavour though I have never tried either. Guest guest
there are some great ham and bacon substitutions for sale as convenience items. Some are vegan, some have egg whites - check out your local healthfood store or healthfood section of your grocery store, or you can get them online. I know Yves, Lightlife etc all make them. They're all soy-based. There's sites online too that sell " ham " chunk-style instead of deli-style. Guest guest
Wham is a frozen meat substitute that looks like sliced canadian bacon. Many baco bits are soy, flavored with yeast extract. Some health food stores have powdered meat flavors like ham or chicken, derived from non-animal sources. You can add Vegex or Vegemite yeast extract. Onion, garlic and/or spices help liven up beans also. -- Be kind. Be of good cheer. Dick Ford
Guest guest
I've used fake bacon bits in beans & salads. I can't remember what brand they were, though. Guest guest
Bacos is vegan.. I don't know if any others are. You could try smart bacon in a recipe calling for bacon.. or some other veggie bacon.. but I've never tried that so I don't know. We have done beans and franks with veggie dogs. Which aren't bad. I don't know how good wham would be as a ham substitute either. Renee angelaseibel <angelaseibel wrote: I've used fake bacon bits in beans & salads. I can't remember what brand they were, though. Guest guest
A drop or two of liquid smoke, which can be found in most groceries, should perk up the flavor. Guest guest
Liquid smoke is next to the bbq sauce in the grocery store. You may also find worchestershire sauce without anchovies, another rarity. If not, soy sauce is useful. -- Be kind. Be of good cheer. Dick Ford
