school lunches, McDonalds etc.

This is such a great topic for discussion! I am always looking for unique

(but not too unique) lunches to pack! I have 3 girls and my oldest just

began first grade. So far, there doesn't seem to have been any problem in

terms of the way she eats vs. the other children (other than the fact that

the staff hands out candy right and left as ridiculous rewards all day

long...another story). I do not allow her to buy cafeteria lunches (for

obvious reasons) and I tell her that they are unhealthy, they are made with

chemicals, and they always include meat, and we don't eat meat. Thankfully,

this doesn't seem to bother her (yet??). She said that someone asked her

why she doesn't " buy " and she told them it was because the lunches are

" gross and unhealthy " . I love it! Instead, I pack her all time favorite

sandwich: tomato and spinach with mayo (we are lacto-ovo veg). Other

things I've tried with success are pb & j or honey (cut into fun shapes with a

cookie cutter), hummus and pita wedges, veggie burgers, quesadillas with

beans and cream cheese--I include organic tortilla chips and salsa as a side

with it and she loves it. Pumpernickel bread (or another flavorful whole

grain bread) with cream cheese and cukes is another one that she likes.

As far as McDonald's goes...we do eat there about once per month (typically

on a play-date sort of occasion) and I order the girls " cheeseburger Happy

Meals with no meat on the cheeseburgers " ...add the apple wedges instead of

the fries and an apple juice or -- for a splurge, a lemonade-- and it is an

OK meal. I order myself a Big Mac with no meat. My kids do not drink soda

and have never had it, so this is a non-issue here. I get funny looks

sometimes from the employees, but it is rare that I have had a screwed up

order. Burger King has an awesome " whopper with cheese and no meat " (don't

say " veggie whopper " as they do have a veggie burger that is less than

good). The BK sandwich has fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles,

cheese, and the condiments --it is great. I get my kids a whopper jr with

cheese and no meat when we eat there. Both places will still charge me for

the sandwich as if it had meat on it, and while this bugs me, at least I'm

able to get this special request honored.

I look forward to reading about other healthy, veg lunches!

some of our favorite school lunchs are egg salad on pita, apple flowers

(spoonful of p-nut butter in the middle of a sandwich container then apple

slices coming out like petals. you can alternate carrots and/or pretzel

sticks between the apples) and leftovers in a thermos (chili, mac-n-cheese

etc)

and I agree, the BK whooper with cheese, no meat is the best Fast food

alternitive for adults. Mcdonald's and all these other resterants and their

" atkins friendly " salads have irked me. All those salads and still I'm

eating a bun with processed cheese. You think they could sell the salad by

itself, and then let the meat-eaters add chicken (if they want to). BK and

subway tried, with their little veggie patties, but I can't be happy until

they're edible. But they have video games in the happy meal, go figure!

As far as McDonald's goes...we do eat there about once per month (typically

Here in Canada the veggie burgers at BK are yummy! :) My son and I love

them. They are also dairy and egg free if you get it with no mayo.

I haven't tried the BK veggie burgers yet as the BK closest to me refuses to

microwave or broil the veggie burgers away from their regular burgers. They

actually didn't understand what I was saying when I tried to explain why.

This was when they first came out and I just haven't gone back and tried

them since. What I was wondering though was does anyone know if the buns

are vegan that the BK veggie burgers are served on?

After reading several posts about going to McD's.

I wanted to mention that they still pre-fry their fries in lard. They do this

before they get to the stores. So the store will tell you that they are fried

in veg. oil there.

I haven't been there since I became veg. 23 yrs. ago. The fast food my son

eats is BK veggie, Subway veggie sand., and Taco Bell Bean Burritos.

That is maybe once a month or less. We are lucky to have a fair number of

ethnic places and some restaurants that offer veg. friendly meals.

Peace,

Laura in MD

The BK veggie burger buns have a small amount of a butter derivative on top.

I think it may be to keep the sesame seeds to stick better. However, I am

not sure of that reasoning. --Tracy

the buns are like 99.9% vegan. Erik Marcus of

www.erikmarcus.com a vegan author has promoted the

almost vegan burger for Burger King and urged vegans

to eat it to further promote fast food places to offer

more veggie and vegan foods for consumers. He said to

request it be microwaved and hold mayo. Also by

asking that they hold the mayo that will insure you

that they aren't just handing something prewrapped..

that they actually prepared it for you. I read Erik's

book " Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating " and I don't see

a problem with eating the burger. But they should put

fresh lettuce and tomato and stuff on it if they want

people to eat it on a regular basis.

Also, If you live near a Wendy's, they fry the fries with the chicken nugget

things, so we don't eat their fries. We're lucky to live near a Sonic. Their

(extremly greasy) grilled cheese are not grilled with the burgers, and they

only put (non-lard) fries in their fryer. But fast food, to me, is barely

food :) So, yeah, once a month is more than enough.

The ones where I live are. I have checked because my son is allergic to

I think you have to check out the particular Wendy's. The ones near us use

separate fryers for the meat products and the fries until about 6:00 when

they go down to one fryer. How do I know this? My brother-in-law worked

there. It probably is different depending on the Wendy's you go to, but the

two near me use this practice.

God's Peace,

Gayle,

Try visiting www.ErikMarcus.com He has info on that . It also has info on

reporting locations that refuse to microwave them on request.

God's Peace,
