School Egg Projects

My daughter's class is going to be doing some " watch the wonder of birth "

projects this year, the most notable being the hatching of quail eggs. Most

likely, since this is done annually at a lot of schools, there is some sort of

company they buy the eggs from? and a probable protocol of what happens to the

birds afterwards (chicks, quail, etc.)...Does anyone know anything about this

practice or have experience getting their school to abandon this project?

I'd like to approach the teacher with some sort of knowledge on this issue.

Thanks,

Alissa

I know that the pre-k class at my younger dd's preschool did this last year

(with chicks). Since she was not in the class, I didn't really get involved in

the process. My understanding was that one of the teachers had parents who

had a small farm & that the chicks would be going there afterward. What their

eventual fate was at the farm, I do not know.

I am wondering, however, if you could inquire as to where the baby birds will

be going after the project. Prior to doing this, you could look into humane

locations that might be willing to take the chicks/quail & then suggest this

to the teacher. i.e. - " I was just wondering where the baby quail will be

going after this class project is over? Will the children be educated as to the

whole life cycle of the birds (how long they can live; where they will be

living after they leave the class, etc.)? " If the teacher says that they are

going

somewhere that is not going to be too great (most likely), then suggest

something like, " were you aware that the _____ animal sanctuary takes in ______

and

lets them live out their whole lives.... "

I don't know if you would be able to find a private party or animal sanctuary

who would take in baby quail, but it might be worth a try. We have a number

of homes around here that are allowed to keep birds, horses, etc. by zoning.

Maybe the farm sanctuary in NY or CA might be able to give you direction on

finding an acceptable home or have some other ideas that I do not. Their

website is: http://www.farmsanctuary.org/

Good luck!

My daughters class did the same project last year

(ours were chicken eggs), I had the same

concerns...When I confronted the teacher she said they

would be returned back to the farm that donated the

eggs. So in our case they unfortunately probably had

the same outcome they would have had if they were born

on the farm.. :-( But maybe there is hope with the

quail eggs, maybe they could be released into the

wild as soon as they can fly?? Good Luck!!!
