Guest guest
I have a question about fish: I personally don't eat it because I do not like it...But, is it considered a meat? Some Catholics abstain from meat on Fridays...but, they're allowed to have fish...I can't understand this...(-: Is fish meat? To what I understand: That being a vegetarian is a person who doesn't eat meat, right? A vegan is a person who doesn't eat anything that comes from or is an animal, right? I know that there are different kinds of vegetarians, too. Now, what is red meat? Ohhhh, I'm so confused...I have researched this before...but, I'm still in the pits. Can someone please explain??? Thank-You!!! ~Michelle
Guest guest
In response to your question -- Vegetarians don't eat animals. (fish is an animal!) Vegans don't eat animals nor their by-products such as milk, eggs and honey. Guest guest
fish eaters are called pescetarians. Fish is an animal. Vegetarians do not eat animals. Vegans do not consume any animal products these include honey, eggs, milk, cheese etc. Some people call themselves vegetarian but really aren't (semi-vegetarians, flexitarians whatever you want to call them) they may eat white meat like chicken, turkey, etc which is considered " healthy " meat. In my opinion no meat is healthy. And fish certainly isn't. Guest guest
Hi from St. Louis! Perhaps I could shed some light on your confusion...I have been a lacto-ovo-vegetarian(organic dairy-nonfertilized free-range eggs-veggies, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, etc.), for 33yrs(since the age of 13yrs. We do not consume any dead animal products(my daughter is 14yrs old today..has never had any fish, fowl, or meat in her system). My interpretation of vegetarian as I spelled out above, deals with not killing other creatures for consumption. For both humanitarian, as well as health reasons. It involves a plant-based diet, as well as a peace/health based consciousness of the world. So... fish are not meat, but most vegetarians do not consume them. Fowl, such as chicken, turkey, quail, etc. are not meat per se either, but we as vegetarians do not consume them. " Meat " , defined as: animal flesh being used for food. Red-meat refers to beef, pork is usually referenced as white-meat. Other creatures that carnivorous & omnivorous people consume would be probably be grouped as " game " , such as deer, rabbits, possum, etc. Seems such a sad waste for those poor creatures. So much healthier for individuals & the planet, if all people were herbivorous. Sorry to ramble on....hope that the info helps you...Take care...may God Bless.... & Goooo Cardinals!!!! & Goooo Kerry/Edwards!!!! mn_proffitt <mn_proffitt wrote: I have a question about fish: I personally don't eat it because I do not like it...But, is it considered a meat? Guest guest
Dear Michelle, Yes, fish is meat. Anything that is " flesh " is meat; that is, an animal's body or part of his or her body. I'm not Catholic, so I don't know what distinction they're making within their belief system. Red meat is considered both beef and pork (nevermind the " other white meat " advertising that pork producers do; that's just in reponse to people erroneously thinking that eating birds -- " white " meat -- is healthier than eating pigs and cows). Vegans are those who do not eat anything that comes from an animal, including both flesh and such bodily products as eggs, milk and honey. I hope this helps. A lot of your questions can be answered at www.vrg.org, the web site of the Vegetarian Resource Group. Best wishes, Jill
Guest guest
Yes, fish is meat. If someone eats fish than they are not vegetarian. If someone eats snails they are not vegetarian. If someone eats bugs (purposely) they are not vegetarian. In other words, anything that was a living creature (other than eggs!) cannot be eaten by a vegetarian. Though any degree of not eating meat is better than being a full blown carnivore. Red meat is cow, dear... White meat is chicken, pig.... I am not sure exactly what makes some animals meat red and others white. And, I am not sure where fish is classified since there are some white fish (halibut) and some red fish (salmon). As for classifications of vegetarians - there are ovo-lacto which eat dairy and eggs, lacto eat just dairy, ovo eat just eggs, and vegans obstain from ALL animal products including honey, wool, etc. If you eat honey but not dairy or eggs than I am not sure what you are called! Hope this helps.
