Guest guest
Since I am new to the whole vegetarian thing I have a question. How do you make sure your kids get enough calcium? Mariah is lactose intolerent, and I don't want the kids to have cow's milk anyway. We were drinking soy milk for awhile, but I had read numerous articles that soy milk is not that great. I had read another article saying that soy milk is bad for kids with adhd, so since Mariah has adhd we decided against soy milk. My girls won't drink rice or almond milk. They do drink some calcium fortified orange juice, but I want to limit juice. I know they are getting some calcium in the fruits and vegy's they eat. They also eat organic rice cheese. But I'm not sure they are getting enough calcium. Kelly
Guest guest
Kelly, Would you share your sources on calcium not being good for children with ADHD? I have not read that and would like to learn more about it. Thanx! God's Peace, Gayle
Guest guest
Hi, RE: soy milk & adhd - Is it because of the amount of sugar in the soy milk or were other soy bean products like tofu also found to be bad? (There are unsweetened soymilks) I did a quick search on google and found this info from: http://www.dcchildrens.com/dcchildrens/forparents/GreystoneDisplay.aspx?Greyston\ eId=P02003 The recommended daily dietary allowance (RDA) for calcium, released in 1997 by the National Institutes of Medicine, varies by age group. * 0 to 6 months, 210 mg * 6 months to 1 year, 270 mg * 1 to 3 years, 500 mg * 4 to 8 years, 800 mg * 9 to 18 years, 1,300 mg http://www.ellenskitchen.com/faqs/calcium.html Re Calcium: USDA recommends - 800 milligrams to 1200 mg for adults; 1c of cooked turnip greens = 450 mg ; 1c cooked bok choy 330; 1c cooked collards 300 1c cooked kale 200mg 1 TBLSP Blackstrap molassis 176.2mg per tablespoon Sesame Butter (Tahini) from unhulled seeds: 63.9mg per tablespoon Other Sources of Calcium: fortified beverages, tofu prepared with Calcium, navy, soy, pinto & garbanzo beans/chickpeas, lentils, quinoa etc. Note: Spinach & beet greens not good sources because they are high in oxalates wich decreases calcium absorption. If you're worried, how about a vitamin supplement? Melanie. kellmar98 wrote: > >Since I am new to the whole vegetarian thing I have a question. How >do you make sure your kids get enough calcium? Guest guest
Calcium can be found in some brands of orange juice and it many other foods; it is pulverized marble dust or limestone. OJ with calcium costs the same as it does without. -- Dick Ford www.dick-ford.com Be kind. Be good. Be true. Be fair. Be glad. Be free. Guest guest
I know that some people have responded on the calcium issue already. I just wanted to emphasize the dark greens are high in calcium. --Tracy
Guest guest
I think it was because of the estrogens in soy....I'm going to have to try and dig up some info. on this.....I long ago deleted this info. that I had gotten from another board that I am on. kelly Melanie Mobbs <mmobbs wrote: Hi, RE: soy milk & adhd - Is it because of the amount of sugar in the soy milk or were other soy bean products like tofu also found to be bad? Guest guest
Thanks for the link. I just read it, and it was very interesting. I may try to introduce some organic yogurt back into her diet as a source of calcium and see how she does. kelly Melanie Mobbs <mmobbs wrote: Hi, RE: soy milk & adhd - Is it because of the amount of sugar in the soy milk or were other soy bean products like tofu also found to be bad? Guest guest
Soy not being good for kids with adhd....not calcium. We had a whole discussion about soy or no soy on another board that I am on. Of course not everyone agreed on the subject....it was a big controversy. Some of the women had posted some articles on the dangers of soy. I've long since deleted these articles. I believe it was the estrogens in soy that are a problem....I could be wrong. If I get some time in the next couple of days I'll try to dig up some info. on this. Maybe post on the other board and find out who had sent these articles. Guest guest
I meant the soy instead of the calcium. Sorry. I am only curious because I have a son with ADHD and he drinks soy milk on a regular basis. We have seen no increase in problems with him because of it. Maybe it's on a case-by-case basis with each individual's body reacting differently. I would love to read whatever you might be able to find, though when you get the time. Thanx.
