HI, I live in Sacramento California. I am 28 and have been vegetarian since I

was 16. We have a 2 and 4 year old and they have been vegetarian since the womb!

I breastfed both for the 1st year and then they went to lactose free formula

supplements and Rice Milk. They have a little dairy in their diet, but not too

much, and never milk by the glassful........but they have had the substitute

cheeses and the real cheeses, but all of it just very sparingly. They like eggs,

but I buy the Omega Eggs. They have never had meat........but they like Boca

Burgers.........other than that, we eat raw and lightly steamed

veggies........they amaze everyone at how they eat vegetables. Even at

restaurants, we have had so many people come up and comment that they can't

believe how our kids are sitting their eating brocolli whole.

We make lot's of pasta dishes with veggies, brown rice and veggies with teryaki

sauces, we make smoothies almost everymorning with tofu, banana, fruit, and rice

protein powder.

I find it very easy because my husband and I are both the same. If he were not a

vegetarian........I don't know how it would work.......it would be very

difficult.

We have gotten negative comments from our families..........even our doctor at

times.........but overall, our kids are totally healthy, never have had any

major problems, and they are both smart and thriving.

One thing I would like to point out too, is that they both have NEVER had an ear

infection.

Every child I know has had ear infections, and some get them repetetively and

had gotten tubes inserted in their ears.

I really think that it is because my kids don't have cow's milk and low dairy.

Anyway, thought I would share.........

Ah, ear infections. People are shocked when I tell them my kids

(ages 1 and 4) have *never* had an ear infection, and *never* had to

have antibiotics of any kind. What do the doctors say? Something

about 3-4 a year for the first few years is normal? Not for our

vegan/vegetarian (and breastfed!) kiddos! :)

While Breastfed, vegan children don't get as many ear infections as other

children, my middle child had one ear infection after another starting at

6wks old. My third had one by about 18mos. My first child however didn't

have an ear infection until she was well over two.

My oldest had 2 I think very early on. The other 2 have never had any and all

are veg. I remember when I was a kid I had antibiotics all the time. I think

between all 3 of my kids they have had them maybe 3 or 4 times. I definately

think it has to do with good nutrition.

My daughter has never had an ear infection. She was

only breastfed the first few months. After I went

back to work my milk supply had went down so much that

I had to start supplementing with soy formula. The

more formula I used the less milk I had.. until I had

none. Do you think it is just being breastfed? or

while being breastfed that they don't get ear

infections? My daughter never had any dairy until she

was about 18 mos old. We used toddler soy formula for

months after she was a year old.. and never gave her

cow milk to drink we have soymilk in our home. But

she probably started having mac'n'cheese around 18

mos. And maybe some other small amounts of dairy in

other foods.

I have to think that maybe my children are the exception. They've been

vegan since conception, were breastfed and have had great nutrition yet they

have all had ear infections. One child has ear tubes which will probably be

taken out in January. She had such a fluid build up behind her ear drums

that she could barely hear. One son has ear problems that required ear

tubes that fell out and he didn't have to have new ones put in. He had

tinnitus due to fluid. Now he has problems with loud noises and water in

his ear causing extreme pain in his ears. The other three have had ear

infections but not to the extent that the other two have had. I'm thinking

that maybe some ear problems are hereditary and nutrition may help it not

get worse but some you cannot help. I would hate to think that anyone on

this list who has similar problems with their children could end up thinking

they are doing something wrong and feel guilty that they could possibly be

doing better in the nutrition area when maybe they are doing great there.

Good nutrition is great and I am obviously all for it, but maybe something

else is going on and moms and dads maybe need not second, third, fourth ...

guess how well they are feeding their children when they get ear infections.

Just my thoughts.

God's Peace,

Gayle

Hi Sharon - Just wanted to say that I just moved out of Sacramento

(to Pittsburgh, PA). Have you been to any of the Sacramento

Vegetarian Society potlucks? I recomend going. They are very nice

people and there are two families (each with one daughter) that

attend on a regular basis. The potlucks are one Sunday a month (I

forget which one) at the food co-op.

Actually, ear infections are more closely linked to if the child is

breastfed or not rather than being vegetarian. Studies have proven

that breastfed children have much less ear infections. Although

even that is not fool proof. My sister was plagued with them

whereas I never had one. So far, neither of my children have had

one either (knock on wood!).

I don't mean to dispel any of the ideas that have been suggested for why

children do or don't get ear infections, but my son kind of blows all the

theories. He was not breastfed (he is adopted), and organic dairy products like

yogurt currently make up a large part of his diet. He is 5 1/2 and up until

recently he had never had an ear infection. Ironically, his only ear infection

hit just as we were about to get on a plane and fly to Europe. It was dealt with

immediately by his pediatrician and since then we've been lucky that he has not

had any more.

It is actually both. Breastmilk actually helps to protect children from

infections because they get mom's antibodies. Also, milk is known to be a

factor in contracting ear infections (as well as juvenille diabetes!).

I agree Gayle.

As I said one of my children didn't have any ear infections until she was

quite old and then the second had one right away. I was quite smug with the

first thinking that it was because I was doing everything right. Then I did

all the same things with my second and he had recurrent ear infections from

6wks on. I think he inherited my brother's tiny ear canals that hold fluid.

I have two children, both vegetarian from birth, both breast-fed for

about the same period of time. My daughter never had an ear infection,

my son had chronic ear infections. The tendency to ear infections has

more to do with the development of the Eustation Tubes in young children

than probably anything else. Breast feeding does help improve the

immune system in general and the sucking action helps to open the

Eustation Tubes and allow fluids to drain properly from the ear.

Just FYI, my son's ear infections were ultimately resolved with the help

of a good herbal medicine book and not by anti-biotics (which suppress

the development of the immune system in young children by completely

taking over the immune systems job).

Hey Terry,

I made the Crown Nut Roast for Christmas dinner with tarrogon roasted

veggies, and gravy (plus a few other " traditional " dishes). It was

fabulous! Everyone raved about it. Thanx for the recipe and moderations.

I tried every herbal remedy and probiotics available. Nothing worked. My

daughter kept getting more and more deaf and my son's tinnitus didn't go

away. I am all for herbal and naturopathic remedies but I think there are

times when a mix of the conventional and herbal remedies may be called for.

I do not use antibiotics for ear infections as it has been proven through

studies that ear infections in children heal without antibiotics in about

the same time as they do with antibiotics. I had the same problem my son

and daughter had - fluid build up behind the eardrum - my mother and brother

did, and so did my husband and his sister. You are right that the problem

lies in the development of the eustacean tubes, however that development can

be hereditary.

Your kids are not the exception Gayle. My son had recurrent ear

infections as an infant/toddler and repeated use of antibiotics

which we have recently learned (ate age 6) led to an overgrowth of

clostridia difficile. One of my daughters has never had an ear

infection, her twin has fluid buildup in her ears so severe that she

can barely hear. She screams when she talks. Both my son - and my

daughter who has the ear issues - are allergic to wheat! They have

other food allergies, as well, but removing the wheat from their

diets, has helped tremendously with both the ear infections and

behaviour problems they were both having.

ah... I always felt frustrated at La Leche meetings when this was

emphasized over and over again. My son who had recurrent ear

infections was breastfed for 3.5 YEARS. My daughter who has ear

infections & fluid buildup in her ears is still nursing at 4 years

(so is her twin sister). Both of my children have food allergies -

another condition that breastfeeding was supposed to prevent!

Imagine how sick they'd be if they hadn't nursed for so long,

though :(

Angela,

Can you elaborate on the behavioral problems cleared up by omitting wheat?

Also, how did you determine wheat as a culprit.

My son was having rages, 45+ minute tantrums (at age 6) and fits of

aggressive and drunken-like behaviour. I had suspected wheat for

quite awhile, but had never eliminated it from their diets long

enough to confirm. We had allergy testing done and two of my three

children were allergic to wheat. (Two different allergists tested

them - two different methods) My son was allergic to more than

twenty different foods - but wheat seems to have been the biggest

issue, followed by all sweeteners except xylitol and and stevia.

Removing the wheat has helped a lot with the behaviour issues and -

but has not entirely solved my son's health problems.

Jackie. I have two daughters. One of them was breated for 6 months and then she

had the bottle till the age of two. The other was breastfed for 15 months and

she never had the bottle. Both of them have ear infections regularly. Doctors

say that it is normal till the age of 6 years old because of the shape the ear

has. What do you think?

Ah, ear infections. People are shocked when I tell them my kids

(ages 1 and 4) have *never* had an ear infection, and *never* had to

have antibiotics of any kind. What do the doctors say? Something

about 3-4 a year for the first few years is normal? Not for our

vegan/vegetarian (and breastfed!) kiddos! :)

I think that ear infections have more to do with a child's anatomy than

whether or not they are vegan or bottle fed. My son is 7. He has had

problems, especially in his right ear, for all of his life. He was

exclusively breatfed, not even solids until he was 9 months old. He's had

dairy twice in his life. My daughter (she's 20 months older) has had one

ear infection, when she was about 8 months old. She was breastfed, but took

bottles (my son refused them - if it wasn't straight from Mom, it wasn't

worth it) and formula. She is a big cheese and yogurt eater. We are in the

middle of an infection now. He's old enough that his anatomy should have

converted, but he still has problems.

Phil: I completely agree with you.Doctors gave me the same explanation about the

tubes stuff, and I agree too about what you say about nutrition.
