My son is 4 1/2 and goes to an in home daycare/preschool with 4 other

children (so he's around sick kids all the time) since he was 4 months old.

He was NOT breastfed and has only had one ear infection and that was when he

was 7 months old. That was directly related to back to back colds he had

had for 3 weeks or so and the sinus drainage caused it. He's had MANY other

colds, but no ear infections. I had one of those ear scopes and I checked

all the time before he could talk. So you can't blame everything on bottle

feeding. BTW, he's also not fat.

Actually, ear infections are more closely linked to if the child is

breastfed or not rather than being vegetarian. Studies have proven

that breastfed children have much less ear infections. Although

even that is not fool proof. My sister was plagued with them

whereas I never had one. So far, neither of my children have had

one either (knock on wood!).

I'm sorry you were unable to breastfeed your child for whatever

reason...you are obviously a great mom feeding your child well to

keep his immune system strong! Your child may not have had chronic

ear infections or be obese, but the research shows that formula feed

babies have a significant increase in ear infections...and obesity---

.. Much of this research is documented at the LLL website as well as

Dr. Sears and the AAP. My children have each had 1 ear infection

and I have been nursing for YEARS ...the got them for the same

reason your child did...back to back colds. BF'ing doesn't meann no

infections...just a reducion in the number when you look at the

whole picture . My sister nursed her daughter for 2 years and she

has had chrnoic ear infections...sometimes these things are

unexplained.

No one is blaming everything on bottle feeding. Statistics show that

breastfed kids get fewer ear infections. They also show that kids in

daycare get more ear infections (and that can be due to exposure to colds,

etc.). Stats also show that dairy products contribute to ear infections

(although this can be connected to the breastfeeding issue).

That doesn't mean that your child fits this mold entirely. We are talking

in general statistics. Not all of my children fit that either (they were

breastfed but one of my children had early, recurrent ear infections). I'm

very glad that your child has only had one ear infection and I wouldn't have

assumed he was fat.

FWIW, My daughter was not BF but did not have any ear infections til age 3 when

we started preschool. Incidentally, they had stopped by age 4.5 when we stopped

eating dairy and she has not had one since. She's 6 now.

lol... Lori... My babies were all exclusively breastfed and they

were some of the fattest babies I've ever seen! People used to ask

me all the time what I was feeding them - and were always surprised

that it was nothing more than mama milk. My kids are all slender

now at 4 & 6 yrs. My husband was bottle-fed and he was a very

chubby baby, too. So I guess this is something that probably has

more to do with genetics, as well.

Angela

Hmmm, although we aren't vegan, my son was on soy formula and will only

drink soy milk (he's 4.5). I posted the message that " Jacq " is replying to

Hi Lori,

I also stopped having horrendous sinus headaches and frequent sinus and lung

infections when I cut out dairy.
