Guest guest
First, I'm new to the group, so let me just say " hello " and " it's nice to be here " . I have been vegetarian for 5 years. On my journey toward becoming vegan I have gone from cow milk to organic cow milk to soy milk, which I like very much, especially the vanilla flavored. However, my 2 children (ages 3 and 6) have been raised on organic cow milk, and neither like soy milk (even chocolate!) ... and neither does their (non-vegetarian) mother. Given my situation, any tips on how to ween them off cow milk? - Alan
Guest guest
Hi Alan, Why don't you try explaining why you don't want to buy the cow's milk anymore. Then tell them that they need to help you find an alternative that they will like. They are more likely to be accepting of it if they help participate in the change. Take them to the store and show them the different types of milk alternatives (soy, rice, etc.). Let them pick one or two to try and keep trying until they find one they like. :-) Jacqueline In a message dated 1/4/2005 10:57:29 PM Pacific Standard Time, soy_decaf_latte writes: First, I'm new to the group, so let me just say " hello " and " it's nice to be here " . Guest guest
What I did for myself - switching to soy milk at the age of 28, two years ago, and not initially liking soy milk at all, was to start mixing small quantities of soy milk into cow milk and than gradually increasing the amount of soy milk. Now, I LOVE soy milk (though still not some brands). That is another key - different brands taste different so try a variety to see what they might like best. Also, have you tried chocolate syrup in plain soy milk? It tastes different than chocolate soy milk and they might like it. , " soy_decaf_latte " <soy_decaf_latte> wrote: > Given my situation, any tips on how to ween them off cow milk? Guest guest
Have you tried any other non-dairy milks to see if they would like those better - almond, rice, etc.? Guest guest
Tips to wean kids off soy milk (I personally don't think soy milk daily is necessarily a good thing)....try oat milk, almond milk, multi-grain milk for sale commercially. The oat milk and almond milk are easy. Vegan Vittles cookbook has lots of recipes for healthy, wholesome homemade milk - very pure and delicious!!! My personal favorite is sunflower milk. Guest guest
Luckily I never had this problem, but the thoughts that come to mind are: Try different brands as they range in taste substantially. Try mixing 50/50 milk and soy and increasing the soy gradually so they get a taste for it. Try using the soy milk in smoothies with fruit etc. as a treat and maybe they'll develop a taste for it. Keep offering it. Somewhere I read it takes many times (12 or something) of trying for kids to like many new foods Provide their mother with information about the dark side of dairy. (Eg: drinking 3 or more glasses of milk a day is a big risk factors for childhood diabetes. Apparantly formula companies in Europe are trying to isolate the " bad " protein in milk which destroys the pancreas and causes diabetes in susceptible individuals. They want to remove it from their infant formula.) It might be easier to switch with mom's help. Not sure if this will help or not, but worth a try:) Melanie. soy_decaf_latte wrote: > >First, I'm new to the group, so let me just say " hello " and " it's >nice to be here " . > >I have been vegetarian for 5 years. Guest guest
I like this idea. Also try to pick the refrigerated kinds of soymilk they tend to taste better than the other kind. Then let them try a couple of different brands to find what that they like. Guest guest
Thanks to all for the many suggestions on introducing my 3 and 6 yr old children to soy milk. I started off last night with mixing small amounts of soy milk into their organic cow milk. So far so good. I'll slowly increase the ratio, and keep my fingers crossed. I agree that, from my experience, the refrigerated milks taste better and have a better consistency than the shelf-stable milks (no matter how vigorously I shake them!). And I'll try adding chocolate to soy milk instead of buying chocolate soy milk, to see if that makes a difference. So far I've only spoken to my kids about the difference in treatment between organic and non-organic dairy and eggs. I haven't yet discussed the gruesome realities of what happens when cows and hens become unproductive after a year or so. But that time will come ... probably coinciding with when I become vegan. For now, I feel good that my kids consider " cow milk " to be just one of the many types of milk and not the only option. And, oh yeah, my 6 yr old doesn't eat fish anymore because she says they are her friends and she wants them to swim free with their fish friends. She came to that conclusion after meeting some real fish up-close at her grandparent's pond. I'm curious about the reasons why a couple people mentioned they don't think drinking soy milk regularly is a good idea. I have heard that adding to your soy protein consumption would reduce your chance of heart diesase. Although I do need to get the kids drinking more water, I'm still considering soy milk to be a protein source for the growing kids and myself. Some of the other milks, like rice milk are missing that. But I'm going to give sunflower milk a try ... just sounds really good! - Alan , Fran <frn214> wrote: > > Tips to wean kids off soy milk (I personally don't > think soy milk daily is necessarily a good > thing)....try oat milk, almond milk, multi-grain milk > for sale commercially.
