Guest guest
This is my first post... I have a seven-month old baby girl (as my nomiker suggests her name is Eva and her birthday is 6-23-04). Before my pregnancy I ate 95 percent vegetarian, and every spring went vegan for allergy season. (It helped with sinus and phlegm issues.) I don't cook meat. I cook vegetarian, often vegan. I'm trying to raise my daughter as vegetarian as I can with a meat-eating spouse and well-meaning pennsylvania dutch relatives. I told my husband I'll kill him if he ever gives her a hot dog. Some things I'm strict on. But my question for right now is: What are your children's favorite quick to prepare meals? My baby already has some favorites-- like when I bake her a sweet potato and put it into the food processor with some unsweetened applesauce. Despite the fact that she hasn't cut teeth yet, she loves to eat small chunks of stone ground wheat dry toast. Mangoes are also a fave. She also seems to like my endamame and carrots blend. I make some food myself and use organic commercial foods like organic baby, earth's best and gerber's tender harvest.
Guest guest
Hi, I have an 11 month old son who I'm also trying to raise a vegetarian (I'm a vegetarian/almost vegan) but have a meat eating husband with very anti-veggie in-laws. My husband was wary of raising him veggie for a number of reasons ( not healthy, making him " sissy " , etc.) but after many attempts to show him how it is better for him, I've gotten him to concede (esp. after him reading " The Food Revolution). Now I just have to deal with family members saying he's going to be sick all the time, not getting enough protein, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, Jacob's loves eating food, even though he is starting to go through a picky stage where he doesn't want to eat everything he used to. Some days are better than others. I try feeding him as many grains, veggies, and fruits, and not all the processed foods that most of the population does. He loves " chicken " nuggets, and it's a good way for him to get his protein. When he was still eating baby food, I liked to give him at least one jar of beans and lentils (I think Earth's best is the brand). He doesn't always like to eat all his veggies, so I like to give him organic veggie juice, which he seems to like. I try to stick to whole foods, and I don't really make any " recipes " for him, but he likes to eat what we do, and he often like the foods with spices rather than always bland food. I gave him tofu for the first time yesterday, and he didn't really like it, but I'll keep trying!! I also don't know how to prepare tofu very well yet, so that probably had something to do with it. I'm still getting the hang of feeding him the right foods, but a lot of the veggie websites give great recipes and nutritional info for raising veggie kids. Hope that helps! Guest guest
Hi, My daughter will be a year old next month. She has been vegan since she was in my belly. She is extremely healthy, never been sick or had an ear infection. She loves to eat! Some of her favorites are 'Smart Dogs', steamed pears w/a little cinnamon, sweet potatoes, tofu cubes, rice w/steamed apples, baked butternut squash, soymilk and fruit smoothies, plain chick peas, mangos, and of course pb+j (but I get the natural pb w/nothing added and 'Polaner' brand jelly with no corn syrup.) Her 'sweet' after her meal, is always a yummy fruit and she gets so excited for it. She has never refused anything I've given her, even kale. She basically can eat whatever myself and my fiance have for our meals, so as long as we eat healthy, she will. I don't know if this helps at all, but all I can tell you is to introduce your daughter to as many healthy foods as possible and be mindful of her sugar intake. Guest guest
You must go buy the book " Super Baby Food " by Ruth Yarron. It was my bible for my daughters first foods. She is 21 months old now and I still reference it every week. It is a lot of information so if you need to start anywhere just go to the chapter on what to feed a 7 month old (And go back and read the 6 month old as well). I made my daughter's baby food and it was easy and cheap. Ruth Yarron provides excellent recipes that your baby will love and will make you happy that they are made with whole foods that are healthy and tasty. If you haev any more questions about it, do not hesitate to ask. Good luck! Lisa and Lillian --- eva6_23 <darranged wrote: > > > This is my first post... Guest guest
Hi Eva It sounds to me that you are feeding your baby much the same way I'm feeding mine. I'm Carol and I have 3 girls, all of whom are vegetarian. My dh is also a meat eater. My 2 older kids ages 10 and 7 came to vegetarianism by themselves. The baby is only 4 1/2 months so she can't make the decision for herself yet. eva6_23 <darranged wrote: This is my first post... Guest guest
Hi, Mother to Eva! I have an almost 11-month-old son. I quite often just share with him whatever I'm eating, which is always vegan and usually very healthy. He loves kale-sweet potato bisque and broccoli bisque (both soups are processed in the blender so they are smooth), bits of cooked lentils and beans (skins removed), pieces of avocado, mushrooms, etc., lasagna (tofu ricotta and whole wheat noddles), steamed carrots and broccoli, brown rice, quinoa, smoothies, pretty much anything that doesn't pose a choking hazard. The smooth stuff is good for getting their digestive systems started on something other than breast milk, but the other foods provide the necessary exposure to other textures as well as providing a manipulating opportunity for their hands, which is important for development. --Allison , " eva6_23 " <darranged@f...> wrote: > > > This is my first post... Guest guest
Wow, your baby is eating a lot of variety already! My daughter was hardly eating anything at 7 months, just some avacodo chunks and baked sweet potato. Had no interest in applesauce, and bananas made her puke (so much for the widespread recommendations of bananas as first food!) Anyway, since your little one is ready to branch out, I'd recommend the book " Simply Natural Baby Food " by Cathe Olson. Lots of quick and simple, healthy food ideas. Not 100% vegetarian, but darn close. It is available online at www.simplynaturalbooks.com. Also, the author frequently posts recipes in the " good eating " forum of the Mothering.com discussion boards. Jen , " eva6_23 " <darranged@f...> wrote: > > > This is my first post... Guest guest
My kids loved crispy fried tofu. You dip slices of tofu in tamari and then in red star brand nutritional yeast. Add whatever seasonings you like (we use Spike) and then fry in an oiled pan. Actually every kid that has come over for supper has liked this! Even the non-veg ones.
