Guest guest Posted January 28, 2005 Report Share Posted January 28, 2005 I still find it ridiculous the way that some Christians use the bible to condone acts that they want to continue to participate in, and ignore the parts that conflict with their life choices. How many Christians who justify meat eating by saying the bible says its ok eat pork, lamb, and seafood, which is banned by the old testament? Lets remind those bible quoting Christians who claim to take all words of the bible literally in an effort to justify thier behaviors some other things that the bible says that God condones: Marriage shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women . That is from Genesis 29:17-28. Secondly, marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives . That is II Samuel 5:13 and II Chronicles 11:21. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin . If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed . That is Deuteronomy 22:13. And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. (Lev. 11:7) And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you. (Lev. 11:10) The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God. (Deut. 22:5) : " If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. " (1 Cor. 11:6) Deuteronomy 21 18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: 19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; 20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. 21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. In the bible, slavery is ok, selling your daughter, stoning people, etc. etc. etc. I don't want to insult any Christians out there, just want to bring up the fact that obviously you can't take the bible 100% literally and that obviously many things condoned in the bible have since been decided are cruel and outdated (stoning, slavery, etc.) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's important to take things in context however, and there are plenty of references to kindness toward animals, not to mention the fact that God's ideal is that we eat no meat (in the Genesis account of Eden, and in Isaiah- I think it is Ch. 52, describing the perfect world of end-times). The meat-eating was only allowed later as a concession to a fallen world, not as a command.
