Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to this group, but I buy Rapunzel Vegan Boullion cubes. They are great, you can get with sea salt, herbs or no salt. My son is 17 and recently became Vegan. My husband and I are not, so it has been a real challenge for us. My son is very strict, he won't eat regular white sugar because it is processed thru bone char. Quite a shocker for me. How do you Vegan adults or teens deal with the real world. My son doesn't like having anything to do with animal products. Where to work? Hanging out with kids that are not Vegan, etc. Any suggestions? Thanks, Amy Bill, Amy, and Brian Bailey thebaileysthree - cristene bailey Friday, February 04, 2005 6:31 AM kasturi you're hindu??? I love that religion. actually- could you contact me off list? Guest guest
Welcome, There are numerous sites on line for both you and your husband, and sites for your 17 year old son. Some are for support, others for recipes, and still others for animal right issues. (just do some searches for vegan) As far as work goes, the only thing I would suggest not looking into are all the fast food places. There are many jobs where food is not at the forefront! His friends is who he should hang out with. By explaining why you are changing your diet, should not exclude your friends. If could be more difficult at times, but there are usually ways to get around it. As an example, at a pizza place, he could order a small or personal size pizza for himself with no cheese! This has been done before, believe me! Best of luck in learning along with your son. --Tracy > I'm new to this group, but I buy Rapunzel Vegan Boullion cubes. Guest guest
Amy, My husband is in the Air Force, I am a stay at home mom, and my daughter is 2.5 y/o. All of our friends are major meat eaters. Infact, my best friend is on a strictly meat or pizza diet. LOL! If we have them over for dinner, I try to cook things that they would like, or would look familiar to them, etc. If they have us over for dinner, I usually bring a dish that my family can eat. The other day, we went to a pizzaria for a birthday party, which is like Chucky Cheese, but bigger. I just fed myself and my daughter before the party, and then again when we got home. We didn't eat there, and it wasn't noticed. I do have it easy when it comes time for cake because my daughter doesn't like it. We just live as normal as possible, and blend in with our surroundings. Everyone I know, knows we are vegan, and they are pretty understanding. I was pleasantly surprised when we moved here, to Idaho, from New Mexico, that even the military doctors here are very supportive of our diet. In my opinion, you work where you can work, within reason(wouldn't want to work in a slaughter house or a leather company). But there are a lot of jobs that are vegan friendly. I was in the military, myself, then got out, and worked as a receptionist for a company that helped handicapped people before I became a stay at home mom. Well, I hope that gave you a little insight into how " normal " vegans can be. Melanie thebaileysthree <thebaileysthree wrote: Hi, I'm new to this group, but I buy Rapunzel Vegan Boullion cubes. Guest guest
When I became a vegetarian at the age of 15 in the 60's, it was a difficult transition, trying to find what I could or couldn't eat. It became easier over time, both for me and for the people around me. It helped when I heard Isaac Beshevis Singer say that a vegetarian is an inconsistent person because, ultimately, if we live, somewhere along the way something else dies, no matter how careful we are. Still, he said, it's better to be a vegetarian. We settle into comfortable habits once we know where we draw the line and where we can find enough to eat. We can wrestle with how far we want to go; we may avoid gelatin because it's made from animals, but do we then avoid watching movies because film is made with gelatin? Or do we decide to watch only digital movies that don't use film? Do we avoid newspapers, magazines and everything printed because the black ink is made from the same kind of bone charcoal that is used in refining sugar and in filterering the air of submarines? These are things for which there are currently few vegetarian alternatives. Although animals aren't killed for the purpose of making charcoal, charcoal is one of the incidental byproducts of the industry. It may be better to focus on ourselves, on become better veg*ns so we can slowly influence the world into changing. .... Be kind. Be of good cheer.
