Guest guest
This is the biggest concern I have: School lunches for my teenager. Of course, the school offerings are worthless and limited. Taking lunch to school isn't " exciting " or status-quo. I need good ideas for sending food to school with my daughter. Please make suggestions. Thanks so much. Vegan Momma donnajmm
Guest guest
Perhaps pita pockets filled with some of her favorite things? You can cut the pita bread in half, and send the stuffing in a small tupperware container, so she can fill it up. donnajmm <donnajmm wrote: This is the biggest concern I have: School lunches for my teenager. Guest guest
Check out this article I compiled for VegFamily.com. The ideas are not specifically geared toward teens, but all are vegan and hopefully you'll find something new/different to try! Guest guest
The following would appeal to me: Crackers with Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese and sprinkles of dill and cucumber slices (may have to pack cucumber separately to avoid soggy crackers) Hummus and pitas Pitas stuffed with lettuce, tomato, shredded carrots and a favorite protein source (for me it might be veggie bacon or a favorite cheese, maybe beans if they are palateable) A dairy option-- yogurt with granola and dried fruit Nut butters and fruit I make cornbread and bake bits of broccoli into it carrot-raisin salad (if you need recipes let me know) I love foods I can nibble on... nuts, crackers, dried fruits , " donnajmm " <donnajmm> wrote: > > > This is the biggest concern I have: School lunches for my teenager. > Of course, the school offerings are worthless and limited. Guest guest
What state do you live in? There are a few states that have passed healthy school lunch resolutions calling for one vegan option for school lunches, and there are a number of other states in which groups are working toward that goal. Also, if you are willing to work with your school district, you might be able to get them to offer something. There are resources available to help you with this. You might want to start with choiceusa.net. --Allison , " donnajmm " <donnajmm> wrote: > > > This is the biggest concern I have: School lunches for my teenager. > Of course, the school offerings are worthless and limited. Guest guest
My 11 year old daughter will not buy lunch from school even on the days when they have grilled cheese or pizza because they use styrofoam trays for serving so I have to pack her lunch everyday! She always gets a Stretch Island Fruit Leather and a bottle of water. As her " side " , she takes carrot pieces with seasoned salt or frozen brocolli that thaws by the time she eats it. When peas or green beans are in season and we can get organic ones, she will take those. Her " main " part is one of the following: peanut butter and jelly sandwich on wheat bread, taco salad (with boca meat), tossed salad, or a wrap with cheese, lettuce and tomato. Sometimes she will take a Stonyfield Farm Juice Smoothie and then some kind of sweet for dessert like tofu pudding or a banana chip muffin. Guest guest
Thank you so much. That link was extremely helpful. I've printed it out for my daughter and will have her mark off what she'll go for. Big help!
Guest guest
Thank you. I am very interested in pushing for change in the school menus. I live in Illinois and don't believe we have the law for one vegan entree per school day. Sounds like a dream! Thanks again.
Guest guest
Hi there, All 3 of our kids have been vegetarian since birth and my 4th grader takes her lunch every day. I agree with you that school lunched are worthless, even if you are a meat-eater I find them lacking. Her school recently added salads to their daily menu, but not one is veggie (sigh). At the beginning of each year we use index cards to come up with as many good lunches that either one of us can make. Having them on cards helps us remember how to balance each one. I always pack her a cloth napkin and I think this helps her feel that her lunch is special. Most of these protein sources for a packed lunches are for ovo-lacto-veggies. I add whatever else she needs (pretzels and fruit with her " chef " salad) to make it a " complete " meal. Pita pocket filled with cheese and veggies or egg salad " chef " salad with cheese, egg pieces, dressing etc in seperate containers so nothing gets " wet " while waiting for lunch pita triangles with hummus most dinner leftovers in a thermos. These are often times her favorite. Since you are feeding a teenager, maybe you could plan on making an extra portion to save when dinner is something he'd really like to have again for lunch. I do this occasionaly, but we usually have leftovers cheese and crackers (she likes to pretend it's a lunchable) hard boiled egg w/ a small salad or soup in a thermos. English muffin pizzas we sometimes by protein shakes from WholeFoods that are a complete protein source. They come in attractive containers and she loves them, but they are pretty pricey. Hope this helps and Good Luck! Jodi Kirkland donnajmm [donnajmm] Thursday, February 10, 2005 8:11 AM Teen Vegan-Vegetarian Lunches This is the biggest concern I have: School lunches for my teenager. Guest guest
My daughter says burritos rule! Also she likes grilled soy cheese sandwiches. She also likes broccoli with a nutritional yeast sauce (white sauce with nutritional yeast) poured over the top. Another one is peanut butter spread over apple slices or pretzels. -Tracy
Guest guest
I know someone who had sugar canes as a dessert - and everybody else wanted some so that part helped him feel better about his vegetarian diet. Also, maybe educate your kids a bit on why vegetarian is good so they can " debate " that with their school kids. Soy milk can be in lunch cups - they pretty much look alike - almost. Guacomale/Quesdalias - something even meat-eaters eat nowadays. Vegetarian sandwiches - etc... For me, when I tried to turn toward vegetarian (still am), for fats, Dr recommended avocado, peanut butter, soy milk I believe has some, and those kind of things if not doing cow's milk. If someone could help with more healthy " fats " information along with Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 - let me know please! My boy's a young toddler so... Reason I am still " struggling " to turn vegetarian is because of budget-wise and recipes that are filling for us. Thanks! Guest guest
For great ideas to help your vegetarian teen check out www.vegetarianteen.com. There are also some stories about how other veg teens are working to get vegan options in schools. PETA has info on doing such work as well. For those of you who either make it or can afford to buy it regularly, veggie sushi is also a fun thing to put in lunches. Whole Foods makes good veggie sushi with brown rice. I don't know this for sure, but I think they also fix it on a different counter from the reg sushi. I've never been able to smell fish on their veggie sushi unlike Market St and other places. Other possibilites include pasta salads, veggie wraps, soups, veggie deli sandwiches, veggie rice salads, fruit salads, burritos, stir fry etc. Hope this helps!
