Guest guest
I'm taking my 11 year old son to New York later this month and we want to visit some vegetarian restaurants. In Mississippi we don't see any. We went to New Orleans recently; google searches gave us restaurants that claimed to be 'vegetarian' simply because they had the word 'vegetable' on the menu. I would appreciate some first-hand experience. Thanks. .... Be kind. Be of good cheer. Dick Ford www.dick-ford.com
Guest guest
Dick, I have several reccommendations for NYC. The Candle Cafe is to die for. They are all vegan! Have the best banana cream pie. The millet loaf is fabulous. They have macrobiotic options, as well as fresh squeezed juice, and sulfite-free wine. Third Ave and 75th, and the new Candle 79 at 79th and Lexington(more casual, and offers a brunch). The website is Candlecafe.com. The other is Quantum Leap- it's in the West Village. VPto go is veg. dim sum.- they have several locations, Lots of people love Zen Palate- also several locations. Hope this is a helpful start for you. Guest guest
An excellent vegetarian restaurant in New York City is Zen Palate. My favorite location was on Broadway and 76th Street (on the West Side), but there are a few other locations, as well. Visit http://www.zenpalate.com/ for locations and menu. I live in London now -- aside from family, the ONLY thing I miss about New York is Zen Palate! Their yam fries are amazing! Enjoy New York! Guest guest
The Vegetarian Resource Group website has a restaurant locator on its web site. You just have to put in the city and state. It may take awhile to figure out what restaurants are near where you are staying. Have fun. Guest guest
I emailed my brother who is vegan and lives in Manhattan, and here was his response: There are so many sites on this if you google. For example, here's one person's choice for top ten: http://www.gayot.com/restaurants/bestof/NY_vegetarian.html On the upper east side, I'd suggest Candle Cafe or their more expensive cousin Candle 79. On the upper west side, Ozu has homestyle japanese. In Chinatown, I recommend the Buddha Boddai Nature Vegetarians Restaurant on Mott Street, or for something very not fancy and cheap but still good try Arhans, though there are a couple other veg places that are more standard american chinese. In Greenwich Village, the asian-style Vegetarian Paradise 2 and the soul food Red Bamboo are next door to each other by Washington Square Park, and there's also Gobo, also asian. Near Union Square, Zen Palate is just ok and expensive, Souen is macrobiotic, Angelica's is very earthy, Terra is kind of fancy. In the East Village there's just a ton of stuff. Atlas Cafe is tiny, like two tables, more of a to-go place, they have soft-serve tofu ice cream, along with all sorts of meals of course. Organic Grill is very vegetarian-style food, you know, scrambled tofu, buckwheat pancakes, tempeh sandwiches, but for that style it's good. I always get their desert crepe. Nearby are places I've never been to but which are popular, the fancy Counter, the not so fancy Caravan of Dreams, a little down the road is Sanctuary which is so-so. There's also a ton in the Lower East Side, but I don't get down there that often. Kate's Joint is very American sandwich place type, for one. I have to mention Teany, the tea place. In Koreatown, there's Hangawi, very expensive but very good and very nice. You take off your shoes, sit on the floor, eat at wooden tables, it's almost an experience. Little India has a bunch of veg Indian restaurants, like Madras and Pongal. I should stop, I'm going on too long... there are really so many... Celebrate 's 10th Birthday! Guest guest
Hangawi - Vegan Korean on 32nd Street between 5th and Madison There are several Vegetarian Indian Restaurants on Lexington between 27th & 29th Streets (Pongal and Madras Mahal are two of them) There is House of Vegetarian (inexpensive and good) and Vegetarian Paradise on Mott Street in Chinatown Helianthus on McDougal Street Angelica's Kitchen in the East Village, Macro-Vegan, possibly a bit too NYC funky. I prefer the Union Square location of Zen Palate personally. Viva Natural Pizzeria on 34th between Park and Madison, it's expensive but I think it's the only place in New York where you can get Spelt Crust, or Amaranth Crust and dairyless topping options. Also check out the Happycow.net site http://www.happycow.net/north_america/usa/new_york/new_york_city/ index.html Happy eating Phil Welsher On Mar 3, 2005, at 9:24 AM, Dick Ford wrote: > > > I'm taking my 11 year old son to New York later this month and we want > to > visit some vegetarian restaurants. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who sent suggestions about vegetarian/vegan restaurants in NYC. We tried several of them and they were amazing. Some updates are in order; several places are no longer there, or were simply not findable: Zenith [we couldn't find any restaurant or former restaurant on that block] Govinda's [we walked by the address, twice, but didn't see it] Meskeram Ethiopian Restaurant Uptown Juice Bar 116 Chambers [we found the faded name on the awning and a For Rent sign] We found and liked: Vegetarian Dim Sum on Pell in Chinatown [which wasn't on any of our maps, a couple of blocks south of Canal off Bowery]. This seems to be the same restaurant as House of Vegetarian around the corner on Mott. Zen Palate [tasty, but pricey and slow service] The Health Nuts [835 2nd Av.] in the evening as they were closing, the veggie and split pea soups were discounted to $2.50/pint; we had good veggie turkey salad and tofu salad sandwiches. Kiran Indian Cuisine, one block east of the closed Uptown Juice Bar on Chambers [the best place we found all week; their menu has dozens of vegetarian items; they have autographed photos of many of the stars of Law and Order, which is filmed a block or so away.] .... Guest guest
Glad you enjoyed the veggie fare in New York, Dick. Just curious: Which Zen Palate did you go to? Guest guest
We went to the Zen Palate at 9th Av. and 46th St., a block from where Zenith should have been. I should have mentioned that we also liked the food at Chipotle near Grand Central Station and Pret a Manger in Rockefeller Center. Chipotle seems to be a scaled down version of Q-doba. Nearly every food place we looked into had some kind of vegetarian items listed. .... Be kind. Be of good cheer. Guest guest
Zenith closed several years ago. It was basically a lower price version of Zen Palate, the chef was a former Zen Palate chef.
