I heard recently about 8th Continent soymilk having animal

ingredients when I was doing some research on Vitamin D fortified

foods. Here is the article I read about 8th Continent:

http://www.vegparadise.com/news19.html

I found it hard to believe that companies would make soy milk with

animal ingredients, so I called the 8th Continent customer support

line (1-800-247-6458) to check it out. Turns out that the claim is

true ... 8th Continent uses vitamin D3 (animal origin) rather than

vitamin D2 (plant origin).

At first the person I talked to on the phone said all the 8th

Continent ingredients were of plant origin, then when I told her

about the article I read she did a little more checking and confirmed

it was fortified with the animal-based D3. She seemed genuinely

surprised.

I politely told the customer support person that I would not be

buying their product because of this and suggested they switch to

Vitamin D2.

I am now checking all the products I eat that just say Vitamin D on

the label to make sure they have vitamin D2 instead of D3.

And although I agree with those who have commented that

seeing " Vegetarian " on the label ought to mean we can consume the

product without worrying about animal ingredients, apparently this is

not always the case. Refer to the link, above.

Regards,

Alan

But Alan, 8th Continent does not claim to be vegetarian on the label - at

least not the bottles of it I have seen sold in my part of the country. And

if you want to go a little further on this, not all cow's milk is vegetarian

for the samee reason - their sourse of D vitamins. But how many vegetarians

consume cow's milk thinking it is vegetarian?

Gayle

Right you are, Gayle. I wanted to let 8th Continent know they were

losing customers that they could easily keep by making one small

change in their product (from Vitamin D3 to D2). I would think they

could increase sales by making the switch and labeling their

product " vegetarian " .

There are many products not labeled " vegetarian " that I eat. So, I'm

accustomed to reading the labels to make sure it doesn't contain any

animal ingredients. Until recently, I wasn't aware that the Vitamin

D used to fortify some products might come from animal origins. So

now I am checking out things like breakfast cereals. I discovered

that my " natural " vitamin contains the animal-based D3, and my

wife's " natural " conditioner contained something called " animal

protein " (gag!).

On the flip side, the article I linked to in my original note

suggests that even when products are labeled " vegetarian " they

sometimes are not: " Often milk or margarine, which may be thought of

as vegetarian products, will contain vitamin D3 of animal origin. We

have even found supplements that are labeled 'vegetarian,' yet

contain Vitamin D3; upon further inquiry, the suppliers were

surprised to realize that the Vitamin D used was of animal origin. "

So it is buyer beware.

<Sigh> I know you're right, Alan. I read all the ingredients even in

things I knew were vegan previously because companies change their

ingredients from time-to-time and what used to be vegan might not be

anymore. I guess that's why I make so much of my own stuff. I'm not saying

I'm paranoid or anything. It's just much easier (and for my families' own

tastes and costs - better) and saves time to make the food my family eats

than to buy it.

And about 8th Continent Soy Milk? When they first came out, I called them

to find out the source of their D vitamins as I did with SunSoy. Both

companies derive their D vitamins from animal sources. When I asked if they

realized they were loosing out on the veg*n market by not using non-animal

derived vitamin D sources they said something to the effect that they did

realize it and they had no problem with that. They were very polite, but in

essence that's what they said.

God's Peace,

Gayle

Someone said Sun Soy was unvegan. They use vitamin D2

so I don't understand what about it would be unvegan.

As far as I can see all of the ingredients look fine

and no different that what is in Silk.. Its just a $1

cheaper per half gallon. Someone help me out here.

We are still drinking Sun Soy....

Then SunSoy changed their D3 to D2 because I called them last year to make

sure what the source of the vitamin D was. Maybe enough of us called and

complained. That's great to hear.

It's been great hearing all the info about the different brands of

soy milk.

After my negative encounter with 8th Continent (which also uses GMO

soybeans), I can report a more positive experience with Minute Maid

orange juice. I have been buying the MM Calcium and Vitamin D

enriched OJ for my family, so I called their consumer info # (1-800-

888-6488)and was happy to learn that their OJ is completly animal-

free, including the vitamin D. Whew! I like starting the day with a

glass of MM OJ where we get 25% of our Vitamin D and 35% of our

calcium ... plus whatever we get from the cereals, breads, fruit,

soymilk, etc.

While I had the MM consumer info folks on the line, I thanked them

for being animal-free and suggested they be more explicit in their

product labeling about using Vitamin D2 and plant sources of

calcium. It could be a competitive advantage for them and make our

job of choosing animal-free products for our families a little easier.
