Sun Soy and Silk

Okay, after the e-mail from someone stating that Sun Soy uses D2 I did some

checking. I knew I had checked with them a while back to see if it was vegan or

not and it wasn't at that time. I called and spoke to a consumer representative

who told me that Silk took control of Sun Soy in Dec 2002. Sometime after that,

Whitewave (makers of Silk) changed to D2 instead of D3, however Sun Soy is still

not made with organic non-GMO soybeans like Silk is. That could be the reason

it is less expensive than Silk in some markets.

I also found out, through a bit of reading that Whitewave was bought out by Dean

Foods - a dairy company. They say that nothing has changed and that nothing

will change in the way they make Silk or in the Dean Foods subsidiary personnel.

I like the Silk soygurt and many of the Whitewave products but as a vegan I

really dislike my money supporting a dairy company. I've been leaning towards

Imagine's Rice and Soy Dream products - what I actually drank many years ago.

Like Alan said, reading labels is not always enough.

Gayle

I agree Gayle but I would rather my kids drink Silk than cow's milk. Right now

that is the soy milk of choice in my house. I am vegan but my kids are

ovo-lacto and I am trying to convert them without making it manditory. So, I am

glad that they go for the soy milk. Thanks for checking all of this out.

Don't limit yourselves to just a few (not so great) choices of soy milk.

I have found THE BEST, and it is Zen Don/Zen Soy!

Not readily available in most supermarkets and mega-warehouse chains,

but has been discovered in HFS/NFS.

Once you try it, you'll never say " silk " again (as you shouldn't if

you are Vegan P-)

Yes Carol, Silk is better than moo juice. I used Imagine's Rice Dream many

years ago and really loved it then and still do now. I've used it with my

kids off and on also. A couple really love it and the other three just like

it. I haven't tried the Soy Dream on them yet. The thing is there are just

sooo many soy milks out there that are veg*n, I just know if the Rice and/or

Soy Dreams don't work, another will. But I do agree with you. We have to

do what we can do and you are a good mommy for trying to convert your kids

peacefully.

Gayle

I really don't care for the Zen Don/Zen Soy, Fidyl. I love their puddings -

especially the banana, but the " milk " I didn't care for. It was also kinda

pricey for a family of seven. The Silk, when it was not under Dean Foods,

was best for us because it was readily available and the price was good. We

go through between 1 - 1.5 gallons of soy/rice milk a day - depending on

whether I'm cooking with it or not. I don't have a large home so not much

place to store the milks in the non-refrigerator type boxes (shoot, there's

not much room to store the kids! LOL) and definitely not enough room in the

refrigerator to store more than a few cartons of soy/rice milk. The fact

that the Silk is available at the local grocery stores at a pretty good

price ($2.36 - 2.50 a 1/2 gallon and even cheaper in the boxes with 2 - 1/2

gallon cartons together) made it affordable for us. Every now and then I'll

find Rice Dream in the local grocery stores but the price is always over

$3.00 for a 1/2 gallon. I know it's weird, but I feel betrayed by Silk.

Time to re-budget and make room for the higher price because I refuse to buy

anymore of their products.

Gayle

In what way is Silk not vegan and how is it supporting

a dairy company? I have contacted White Wave just

recently to address this issue which came up on

another discussion group that I'm on, that their

products may or may not be vegan and they emailed me

back stating that all of their products are vegan

except one or two products which contain honey. I

forget what those were but they were not soy milk or

yogurt products and it is clearly identified in the

ingredient label. I will be glad to request a

response to this or other concerns or doubts that

anyone has about Silk products. Lisanne

Lisanne,

I don't believe anyone said that Silk wasn't vegan. My concern is that it

was bought out by Dean Foods, a dairy company. Though the Silk hierarchy

remains the same, any money paid to buy Silk/Whitewave products goes towards

the support of Dean Foods.

I think it was this comment that gave me the

impression that Silk was not considered vegan by

someone

'Once you try it, you'll never say " silk " again (as

Thanks Gayle. I have used Rice Dream as well. My 8 yo will drink it,

especially if it is chocolate. My 11 doesn't drink any milk, not soy, cow or

rice. The baby will move to soy and rice when she is old enough to be off

formula.

Have you tried Wholesoy yogurt? In my opinion, it's far better than

Silk yogurt.
