Sand, Lead Poisoning, and Diet

Just learned this morning that " clean " play sand could have lead in it. My

children play in this store-bought sand every day and I became so concerned

about possible poisoning that I called my pediatrician who will have them tested

for lead in a few weeks.

I read on one site that a vegetarian-type diet will protect the child from this

poisoning but I don't know how valid that information is. Does anyone have any

knowledge regarding this?

Also, if my children do have lead poisoning, does anyone know of any natural

remedies for getting rid of the lead if it is possible to do so? Thanks!!!!!

I am going through this now, my son at his 18month check had a

elevated lead level (it's coming down now) First off vegetarian diet

does not prevent lead poisoning. Lead can be found in paint, water, a

lot of candies from mexico have lead in them or in the wrappers. In

our case it is the paint in our house, they do not have to eat paint

chips just touching an area that has lead based paint that is not in

great shape can leave a residue on their hands or toys etc, then if

the put those things in their mouth, they are ingesting the lead. So

good hand washing before meals is very important.Second depending on

the level they only treat it with diet, lead sits in the stomach and

is absorbed, so an empty stomach absorbs more lead. Foods high in

calcium, iron and vit c bind with the lead and help to excrete it. So

frequent healthy snacks and meals will help lower lead levels. The

dietician we talked with recommened meat and I told her we were

vegetarian and she said so am I and this is the only time I ever tell

someone to eat meat but if you get protien from other sources thats

fine.

So in our case just watching his diet and making sure he always had

food in his system has brought his level down, I have tons of

inforamation if you have any other questions or just want to talk feel

free to email me off the list.

I accidentally deleted the first e-mail about this. There is something call

Chelation (pronounced more like Key-lay-shun) that is used to remove heavy

metals out of ones body.

My daughter has adhd, and I am on several adhd boards. People on these boards

talk about Chelation for their adhd or autistic children all the time. Some do

this themselves, but most of them find a Dr. that does it. I do not know much

about Chelation, but I certainly would consider it if I found out my child had

some type of heavy metal toxicity. I'm sure you could do a search to find out

more about it.
