My kids do eat dairy but they don't drink milk. I remember when my oldest was

younger. We would go to parties or play dates and the moms would break out the

milk and I'd rush over and say " she doesn't drink milk " . They thought I was

crazy. I don't beleive that milk is good for human children. My middle one

drinks soy milk which she just calls milk. She calls the other kind cow's milk.

The baby will also drink soy or rice. My kids are tall and healthy and they

have never drank cow's milk. So, you don't have to give in.

> My kids do eat dairy but they don't drink milk.

Hey,

First of all let me preface this message by saying that I'm not judging,

attacking or otherwise trying to be offensive towards anyone who consumes

dairy in any form. It is a personal choice that no one has a right to

attack.

I've seen this statement (the one above) many times before. I was just

wondering what the reasoning is for consuming dairy which comes from cow's

milk and not drinking cow's milk? To me it seems that one is just as

unhealthy as the other (for both the humans consuming it and the cow's

supplying it). I'm just wanting to understand - nothing underlying is meant

by my asking.

God's Peace,

Gayle

My girls don't drink cow's milk either. They drink soy milk, rice milk, and

calcium OJ. They do however occasionally have ice cream or cheese. People

think I'm nuts not giving my girls cow's milk, but after I did some research on

it I decided it was not such good stuff to give my kids.

Both my girls age 2 and 4 drink Soy milk and occasionally hormone free cows

milk when at grandma's house and they are both in the 97% for height.

I don't consume dairy at all (I have in the past) and

my husband does. I'd like my daughter to not consume

any dairy at all. We talk about the cows - pus and

blood in the milk. How the animals are treated etc.

I think the statement you are citing has to do with

quantity. We recognize dairy is not good for us and

try to limit consumption in ourselves/children. But

if our child goes to a birthday party and kids are

eating ice cream and they have a scoop its not the end

of the world. Vegetarian she has to be - mommy and

daddy both are - vegan she has to decide on her own.

And she makes that choice on her own everyday. At any

rate she's not going to down 3 or 4 glasses of cow

milk everyday because I'm not STUPID and I know its

not healthy and she's knows its not healthy but so

would be letting her eat 3 or 4 bags of potato chips

every day.

No offense taken. I am one of those people. I guess for me there are several

reasons. The first is logistics. When living in a big city or the West Coast

I found it easy and affordable to be vegan and healthy. In small towns

(where I currently live ) it can be very expensive and time consuming to

track down things and drive long distances to get them. If you manage to

find the stuff, it can quite often be outrageous!

Also depends on your care situation. My family is great about our

vegetarianism but veganism is harder for them to accomodate. They try, I am

grateful for it but if they ask if it is okay to order a pizza, I usually

say yes and then pick half the cheese off for my son and myself. Also,

school and daycare are other issues with similar problems. I am already 'on

their case' (how I'm sure they sometimes see it, not how I try to be) about

meat, I don't want to add more to the mix. In one daycare I simply said he

was lactose intolerant which was very effective but it doesn't always work

out...

The reason I don't have too much of a problem with it is that I don't see

dairy as quite as cruel as meat. I am not saying I do not recognize the

cruelty (It was a PETA pamphlet that first turned me vegan prior to my

pregnancy). It is just something I can live with for now. I try to buy

local, organic, limit consumption, etc so I do feel a bit guilty but I can

live with it.

As for my final reason, though we only occasionally have ice cream or cheese,

it is the additives that I have noticed in the soy varieties that make me

uncomfortable giving them to my son. My choice (for now) is to not use any

milk or alternative procucts (other than rice milk) on a regular basis and

to use the real deal organic stuff in a pinch or to allow lapses to occur

when we are out.

That is where we are now...I can see this changing. Another issue is having

a meat eating partner who shares food prep and has agreed to no meat cooked

in the house (even for him) but would really balk at no dairy at all. He

finds it very hard to come up with alternatives. Luckily, has decided that

he is probably lactose intolerant which has greatly reduced the amount of

dairy in his meals. Only about 10-15 % now. :)

This is just me, I'm sure everyone has a different story.

I agree. I think it is just as unhealthy and I would prefer if they didn't eat

it. Both of my girls came to vegetarianism on thier own. I never forced either

one of them. My husband is a big meat eater so there occasionally is meat in

the house. My middle child never liked beef but she loved chicken nuggets until

she realized that they came from real chickens. My oldest loved meat of all

kinds but when she turned 11 all of a sudden she decided that it was cruel to

eat animals so she stopped. I have been veg for all of thier lives so they did

get to see the other side. I have talked to them about eating cheese, both the

health aspects and the ethical concerns. If they do decide not to have it it

will be on thier own, thier decision. They are both old enough to decide what

they want to eat. I know lots of veggie parents disagree with this but it works

in our house. I also feel very comfortable that when they go to a friends house

they will not try to sneak meat behind my

back. In fact, my middle dd best friend (8 years old) now is telling her

mother that she doesn't want to eat meat. She is giving her all the gross facts

about meat " production " . The mom wants to kill me. I told her that I would be

happy to talk to her about vegetarian food. we'll see.

My son was on soy formula and when he turned a year old, I gave him cow milk and

he threw it in the floor. He liked soy milk, so that's what he drinks. Always.

He will be 5 on Sunday. I hate cow milk and always have, so I didn't think it

was a big deal. We are vegetarian, not vegan, so we consume other dairy

products, but we don't drink milk, because we don't like it.

I'm not the person you asked, but I'm in the same situation. I think, I didn't

see the original post.

Lori

P.S. A friend, not veg, pointed out that soy milk contains iron and cow's milk

doesn't, so that's a little bonus too.

these are my two cents, since you brought that up....in the parentheses

no need for animal

weaned soon (The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding

for 2 years, why stop now, babies need milk, human milk, it has the

perfect amount of fats they need)

my husband's family occassionally gives her chicken.

LMAO, that's hilarious.

it goes to show the blindfold that most non veg kids wear. i dont think they

understand that meat actually comes from a slaughtered animal, and that the

reason beef is brown is because that's what color blood turns when you cook it.

Hi Lori

I'm not sure of the accuracy of that statement but I can tell you that cow's

milk can cause iron deifiency anemia in children because it can cause

microscopic bleeding in the intestines, enough so that the child becomes anemic.

I don't know if other dairy does that. I do wish that my children would give it

up though.
