Even if you are ovo-lacto, commercial keylime pies ar not suitable

since they have gelatin in them. I haven't seen any commercial mixes

either but I have been served good keylime " cheesecakes " (tofu based)

at restaraunts in Atlanta.

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are vegan and we are raising our 21 month old

daughter vegan as well. We used to live in Atlanta, GA and I didn't

have to really think about our lifestyle. Now, in NW Florida, I am

having problems such as finding vegan or even vegetarian friends for

my daughter. Eating out with family and friends is also practically

impossible. Although we have a nice food cooperative, finding a

diverse variety of organic vegan foods is difficult here.

It's great to find this board. I have participated in other boards

but from the previous posts, I think this board will give me the

support I need.

Not all commercial keylime pies have gelatin. If someone is ovo-lacto you could

ask the server in a restaurnt or check the ingredients on the pkg. It used to

be one of my favorites. I don't eat it now because it is not vegan.

Oh man, to think that I went years without eating keylime pie while I

was ovo-lacto vegetarian! Doesn't matter now though. If you find a

recipe for a vegan homemade keylime pie, please post it!!

Thanks,

Carrol

Actually the authentic Key Lime Pie does not have gelatin in it. It has egg

yolks, key lime juice, and sweetened condensed milk. The egg whites (from

the yolks) are beaten until stiff and folded into the mixture of yolks,

milk, and juice. Because of the risk of consuming raw eggs, there is an

altered form of the original. The eggs (yolks and whites) are replaced with

Cool Whip. My mom got the recipe from one of the oldest restaurants in Key

West when we lived down there. Commercial versions may indeed have gelatin

in them. They normally use straight lime juice too and not key lime juice,

but the true Key Lime Pie does not have gelatin in it.

Here is a Vegan Key Lime Pie recipe I use. It comes close to the original.

God's Peace,

Gayle

Key Lime Pie

8 servings

30 minutes 30 mins prep

1 package Mori-Nu extra firm lite tofu

8 ounces soy cream cheese

1/2 cup key lime juice

2 teaspoons grate lime rind

1 package mori-nu mates vanilla pudding mix

1 package mori-nu mates lemon pudding mix

1 graham cracker pie crust

1. Drain excess water from tofu.

2. Blend tofu with lime juice in food processor or blender until completely

creamy and smooth.

3. Add the rest of the ingredients; re-blend until smooth.

4. Pour into pie shell and chill 2-3 hours.

I don't know that its exactly like a traditional keylime pie, but

Tofu Mates has a recipe for making keylime pie that is very

delicious. If you have ever made Tofu Mates in other flavors

(chocolate, banana, lemon, etc.) it is the same kind of puddingish

consistancy. And, it is VEGAN.
