We had a momma bird build a nest in our hanging flower pot right

outside of our front door. She had five eggs in there and has been

tending to them for weeks. Well they have hatched....not sure when.

We left them all alone for fear she would leave. Now in the past 24

hrs. Mom is GONE! She has not come back. I got on a step stool to

peak in there. I saw two heads and thought they were dead. Then one

opened its eyes and looked at me. It is very hot and humid here, and

I am afraid they will die. I am so sad, but I don't know what to do.

Help! Any advice?

Good News! Momma came back late last night and was still there this morning. I

am so relieved. I got a better look and there are three grey fuzzy headed

babies with yellow beaks. Oh, so cute!

Have you called animal rescue or welfare? In Arlington, where I live, they

come out and get whatever you call about. Then, if they are sick or still

babies, they send them to people who rehab them until they are better and

able to live in the wild again. I am one of the drivers, and it's amazing

to see what can be saved. Yesterday, I saved 2 baby birds, one was only a

few hours old. I'd definitely recommend calling them and having them help

you before it's too late!!

Kelly,

A similar thing happened to us last summer and even though I tried to feed

the babies worms, they were too young (and, let me be honest, there was no

way I could actually feed them a worm-I know about the food chain I just

don't want to be a part of it...someone else did it) and seemed not to know

how to eat. They all died. It was awful. Perhaps you could contact the

wildlife people and they could help you. Good Luck! :)Madeline

I did call a local bird sanctuary before Momma bird finally came home last

night. They told me to put dry cat food and water in a blender. Then put the

contents in a syringe. I did this and two of the three birds greedily ate this

mixture. I did not touch the birds so when Mom came home she had no problem

with human smells or anything like that. Momma bird has been there all day, so

I am relieved.

For a nestling (baby bird that does not yet have all of it's

feathers) you would need to either pre-chew or mash the worms for

it. They can't eat whole worms. Most pet stores sell baby bird

formula for hand feeding.

We found an abandoned baby bird yesterday and were unable to locate

a nearby nest. We picked up some formula at the pet store last

night. It ate a bit of it from a dropper, but still died during

the night - most likely from dehydration :( It was a very hot day

yesterday.

The woman at the petstore told me she'd had several people come in

yesterday because they'd found abandoned birds...

I found a baby bird many years ago. I fed it thinned

down dog food through a small dropper. It may not be

appealing but it saved its life. Try looking for an

aviary or wild life rehab in your area. Hopefully I

helped. Good Luck, Sharon

I had thought about mashing up worms for the baby birds, but I just could not

bring myself to do it. Thank God, the woman at the bird sanctuary told me about

the dry cat food in the blender trick. Even though Mom is back I'm still

worried about those babies. It's very hot and humid here and when I looked at

them today they didn't look too good. I'm hoping it was just the heat and they

will pull through. It's so sad to me to hear these stories of the birds

dying.....I'm such a softie when it comes to this stuff. Kids and animals get

to me.
