Anyone know of a brand of vegan chik'n patties? We used to buy Health

is Wealth, but their new " tastier " recipe has egg whites. Oh I was so

mad when I saw that. Since then, every other brand I have checked

also contains egg whites. Or does anyone have a good recipe for

making them?

gardenburger has some chick'n patties. They have flame

grilled patties that are vegan. The patties used in

all the convience meals are vegan. The herb crusted

cutlets have honey in them.

Hi Rachael,

I haven't tried this recipe, but I found a recipe for fried chicken on

vegcooking.com. It uses Chicketts which is a vegan chicken substitute. I

haven't found anything mainstream that is vegan for chicken substitute,

which bugs me b/c I like the texture of the chicken rather than beef or

pork. The recipe I found could probably be shaped into patties. Here you

go, good luck!

~Katherine

Fried " Chicken "

Makes 4 servings

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. onion powder

1 tsp. pepper

1 tsp. garlic powder

2 cups unbleached white flour

4 Tbsp. nutritional yeast (optional)

3 Tbsp. yellow mustard

1/2 cup water

2 Tbsp. baking powder

1 lb. mock chicken (try Worthington Chic-Ketts or White Wave wheat meat)

3 1/2 cups vegetable oil

Mix together the salt, onion powder, pepper, garlic powder, flour, and

nutritional yeast in a deep bowl.

In a separate bowl, dilute the mustard with 1/2 cup water.

Add 1/3 cup of the flour mixture to the mustard mixture and stir. Add the

baking powder to the dry flour mixture and mix.

Dip chunks of the mock chicken into the mustard batter, then drop each chunk

into the flour mixture and coat with the desired amount of " crust. "

Fry the chunks in hot oil on medium-high heat in a large skillet or deep

fryer until crispy and golden brown, turning as needed.

I shop at a local 7th Day Adventist book store for vegetarian frozen and canned

foods. You might want to see if there's one in your area. They are great about

ordering special items with or without certain ingredients. Morningstar, and

Boca are the brands that come to mind that might not contain egg whites. Best

of luck! ~Faith Johnson in Colorado

Actually, due to complaints by vegan consumers, Health is Wealth is

bringing back the original vegan recipe! It should be in stores soon. It

will say " vegan " on the box.

Talking back to companies really does work!

I believe it is in the " Cooking with PETA " but they have a good recipe for

Un-Chick Fillet. It is more like a sandwich patty. Here is the recipe from my

memory,

Un-Chick Fillet:

1 lbs extra firm tofu (frozen/thawed)

1/4 cup wheat germ

1/4 cup wheat flour

2 tbsp nutritional yeast

1 tbsp grated onion

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp poultry seasoning

1 tbsp oil

Mix and mash all ingredients except the oil in a large bowl. Form into patties

and brown on both sides in the oil.

(Sometimes it is still too wet, so I add more wheat germ and flour until it will

make a patty that will stay together well.) My husband loves these, and asks

for them often.

Hi, I have been seeing " New, tastier " Boca Ckick'n

patties and nuggets that don't contain egg whites.

The box has a yellow label on it saying they're new.

The same stores are still carrying the " old " ones

until they run out. Read the ingredients carefully,

the boxes are almost identical. I was very pleased to

find out they no longer use eggs.

That is great news!! I will be looking for them. I emailed Kraft some time ago

suggesting that they make the chick'n with out egg whites and they replied that

they never claimed to be vegan. So This is really good news :):):) Thanks for

the info
