Guest guest
if it's a question of allergies, i heard bichon frises (sp?) are good choices for peopel allergic to dander. what about a guinea pig? they're squeaky, live 5-8 years, and very affectionate or would that present the same hair allergy issue? I work with a rescue in the california-nevada area and found a really good resource website is www.petfinder.org Megan - Thanks everyone for all the ideas! We really cannot do any kind of cats - it is not just allergies, I guess the asthma is an increased sensitivity. Also, we're not too keen on breeders or extra medicines. We are adjusting to a future with out cats in our home:( The boys have asked about turtles a couple times...I will think about this. Though I think as with the fish, they won't get a greeting when they come home from school or something to snuggle. I have lots of info on different dogs now...who knew! I love the greyhound idea and got to thinking there may be other rescue organizations that would let us do a test run with a dog...I cannot go thru having to give up another pet!! Thanks again everyone! m
Guest guest
Petfinder.com is awesome!!! You can see pictures, updated regularly, of animals in shelters, nationwide! You can e-mail or call the shelter with the animal you feel pulling at your heart strings. Through Petfinder.com, over the past few years, I have adopted a cat, three ratties and two chinchillas. Guest guest
I've found a wealth of information within this group on all the topics that have come up. Guest guest
Thanks Megan - I've heard that bichon's are good, too! I had a guinea pig as a kid, just loved him, Curly Cuthbert. Unfortunately, no rodent types either. It'll have to be a dog (maybe) or a reptile. I think we will continue to pursue the dog idea and " doggy sit " a breed that we think will work...if it does then we'll officially adopt! m
Guest guest
I can only suggest that if you are not pleased with the route or amount of space a particular discussion is taking is to start your own discussion. Post a question to the group, that should get lots of responses. Talk about what you made (or will make) for dinner. Post a recipe. Most people are still talking about pets because nothing else has come up. I just posted about beans hoping to start up a conversation about that. However, during lulls there will be off-topic discussions. If you're getting daily digests and it's still too much to scan through for " relevant to you " topics, then you can also choose " No Email " under your preferences and just go to the group's website, which is what I do. Then as I'm reviewing posts, I can also check the files for recipes and it's easier to go back and search for posts. Just a couple of suggestions, instead of just asking for a topic to stop. Guest guest
> >The boys have asked about turtles a couple times...I will think >about this. Please don't, unless you get a rescue. The turtle trade is ugly. They are illegal to buy in many states. They can die from over handling. I have one who was rescued when I was 5...he's actually likely older than me. I've had him my whole life, but...consider...a turtle is a 30-60 year commitment. They cannot be released into the wild, ever. While the males are smallish (8 " across) and " only " need a 55 gallon or larger aquarium (as well as a turtle filter, aquatic plants to eat on top of regular food, a full spectrum heat lamp, etc.) the females grow to be dinner plate sized. Depending on the species, they can be aggressive and bite a fingertip off. Don't get me wrong, I love Walter, but he would have had a better life if he could have lived in the wild. It wasn't an option for him, but I'm would never give the turtle trade a single dime. Many of their animals are poached as well. However...if there's a rescue you could help...why not? You could also talk to a local rescue about fostering animals to see how your kids do with them. Then, if the allergies are a problem or it's not the pet they want, you could find out before making a major commitment. Lots of rescues have iguanas and they're vegetarians! Just remember...they live a long time and grow to be 4' long requiring a big habitat! >I have lots of info on different dogs now...who knew! I love the >greyhound idea and got to thinking there may be other rescue >organizations that would let us do a test run with a dog...I cannot >go thru having to give up another pet!! Doubt I'll really do reptilians - am aware of some of what you shared - will keep all the extra info in mind! We've done rounds of allergy tests yes and ick! Guest guest
I can relate to you. I lost both my cat of 13 years and my dog of 12 years on the same day last October and still feel sad about their passing. I can still hear my dog laying down upstairs and my cat playing. It is hard not to have them both greet me at the door when I arrive home. Our companions were dearly loved, eh? laurie " Thanks to all who responded about losing a pet. I'm slowly getting used to not having Dozer here--I don't hear his chain jangling or hear him licking his paw. I'm moving thru the guilt phase--why didn't I take him for more walks, why did I speak harshly about his chewing his leg, etc... Today I went to the pet store for gerbil food and saw a creaky old black lab with a grey muzzle, and I started to cry. Then I got home and the sympathy card from his drs office had arrived, so I boo hooed again. It is amazing what a hole a pet leaves in your day-to- day and in your heart. peace, Laura " laurie Sports Rekindle the Rivalries. Guest guest
Alana, my dog Taco also loves peppers. He goes out to the garden with me and sniffs around my pepper plants until I give him one. They are about his top favorite, but he also loves snow peas, and has to be kept away from the asparagus beds as he will eat the new stalks right down to the ground! We had a dog in Hawaii that loved coconuts and avocadoes. Paula , " Alana Farrell " <alana.farrell wrote: > > I read the post from Anne where she talked about her dog drooling over > a banana. Guest guest
Hello, My dog is a male 14 year old terrier hound mix. He loves most everything, even chili;if it doesn't try to bite him back, he will try to eat it...lol. My female, 8 year old collie/shepherd has more discerning tastes..she will try some things (she especially loves fried or boiled eggs, mac 'n cheese), but generally she is not an adventurous diner.
