It was a surprise the other day when a friend and neighbor asked if our dog was

vegetarian, since we are. For some reason I had assumed that buying dog food at

the health food store (with ingredients that sounded like real food and not

by-products) was good enough. Well, now that I've gotten to thinking about it,

I'm set on changing my dogs diet to a cruelty-free diet.

So here's a call out for vegetarian/vegan dog food recipes and ideas.

I look forward to hearing from the group. You all always have such awesome

ideas! And a huge thank you in advance...

We feed our dogs " wysong " brand. We have our local pet food store order the

vegan dry dog food from Wysong. Our dogs eat it up.

There is another brand that I am not sure of the name, but it could be

Nature's Recipe.

Also on line there are some options! Do a search for vegetarian dogs.

Blessings,

Tracy

There are several vegetarian dog foods on the market. Check the PETA website.

They have a list of dog foods.

Hi Faith,

We have four vegan dogs. They are very healthy, happy, and energetic. The

oldest two (5 & 7 years) transitioned to a vegan diet a year and a half ago

when we did. The two youngest (1 year old sisters) were adopted at 9 weeks

and we transitioned them to a vegan diet at that time.

There are some web sites and books on the subject. You can do a search on

Vegetarian or Vegan Dogs: you'll find a handful of different prepared food

options as well as literature on making your own food.

We have been very happy with Wow-Bow's veggie crunch kibble. We use this as

our dogs' main meal staple and then also give them some of whatever we are

eating.

If you're going to make your own food, there is a supplement called Vegedog

that you can add to the food. It insures that your dog gets all the

vitamins, minerals, and nutrients he/she needs.

Congratulations on adopting a cruelty free diet for your dog!

Melissa

Evolution makes an excellent vegan dog food:

http://www.petfoodshop.com/. They recommend adding some fresh

vegetables to the food. Nature's Recipe also makes a vegetarian dog

food. We actually use Dick Van Patten's vegetarian (vegan) dog food,

though, because our dog is allergic to wheat and soy (in Evolution and

Nature's Recipe):

Thanks so much. Our health food store carries Wysong too, and we've been

considering it but are looking for homemade dog food ideas first due to the

cost. I think I'll pick up a bag though and replace a few of her meals and see

how she likes it.

Thanks again for the info!

Faith,

We have 2 mostly vego dogs, they have been mostly vegan for over 6 years

now and they are both getting on in years now - 11 & 12.

We cook their evening meal in big batches - a base of lentils (red or

brown) or beans, with rice or pasta plus lots of vegies- potato,

cauliflower, zucchini, bean, broccoli etc. - whatever is going. We

often grate some fresh stuff in too. We add vegie salt or a non-animal

stock - we can get chicken or beef flavoured here, plus herbs to make it

taste good. With the beans, some, particularly soy, need to be ground

up/mashed or they won't get digested properly.

For breakfast they love bananas, leftovers of sandwich and/or breakfast

cereal from my children, sometimes some apple plus vegan dog biscuits

which are made here in Aus. They are fully nutritionally balanced so

make up for anything they may miss elsewhere.

They have done very well on this diet. The only problem is having

something to chew on. We used to just give them raw carrotts, but only

one of them really likes that. Synthetic chew bones were not at all

popular. One of the dogs had to have a couple of rotted teeth out

last year, so now we do give chew strips and other various non veg

chewie things a couple of times a week.

Hope this helps.

Karen
