vegan transformation

Hi all -

just wanted to share...a few weeks, two things happened simultaneously that have

helped me to make rapid progress on my path to veganism. First, at my son's

two-month check up, my pediatrician suggested that his regular stomach upset was

being caused by the dairy in my diet, and second, and this is gross, we started

seeing fat globules in our milk. We have bought Horizon Organic 2% for years;

it is the most widely available and least expensive organic option in our area.

But the fat globules - eww!! It was like seeing a glob of chicken fat come out

of your milk carton. Nasty! I don't drink much milk anyway, but when I was

making my coffee one morning, a big glob came sailing into my travel mug, and

that was it for me! I can't imagine what it was or what caused it, but we found

the problem in more than one carton. Gross. Anyway, I recalled that someone

suggested waiting a couple weeks after giving up milk before trying something

else, so I did that. I haven't cut dairy out completely, but mostly. So

tonight I drank my first small glass of soymilk, and...it was super!! I've

wanted to do this for so long, and now I feel as though I have made some real

progress. I am so excited!!! Now if I can just convince my 3 y/o dd that this

new milk is yummy...

-Hooray! good for you- I remember how excited I was making the

transition - from cow to soy milk - and each step toward being a

vegan is just as exciting and freeing- I moved my daughter over at

age 5 - I just didn't give her any other option - the vanilla Silk

soy milk was very good - and the very vanilla is almost sinful -

after about 2 weeks or so - she didn't even think about the other

milk and cream we had used before - good luck and congrats

Congrats!

While I am not yet vegan, I did make the move from cow milk to

soymilk several years ago, and for me it was love at first sip ...

I've never looked back. I generally drink vanilla soymilk, but keep

some of the unflavored soymilk around for use in cooking some foods.

My kids (3 and 6 at the time) started off drinking cow milk, and

expressed an initial dislike of vanilla soymilk. At the suggestion

of folks on this group I started mixing in small amounts of soymilk

with their cow milk until they got acclimated to the taste. As I

slowly increased the amount of soymilk to 50% or so they noticed it,

but by then they liked it. At this point they like the taste of

both. I generally give them soymilk, or mostly soymilk if they

request a blend. Unfortunately, my non-vegetarian spouse is somewhat

reluctant to cut the cow milk entirely out of their diet. I'm not

sure why, but perhaps she would feel isolated as the only cow milk

drinker in the family.

I used the blending technique because I didn't think it would be easy

on the kids to stop drinking milk for two weeks. They are

in the habit of having warm milk (usually with strawberry flavoring)

as part of their nightly bedtime routine.

Good luck!
